New 2016 Honda Fit fuel Guage
#22
- miles driven since last fillup: 346.7 mi
- avg MPG (car computer): 42.8 mpg
- predicted remaining range: 15 mi
- gas to fill up tank: 8.66 gal
- actual mpg: 40.0 mpg
- gas tank capacity: 10.6 gal
- gas remaining in tank at fillup: 1.94 gal
- actual remaining range based on actual mpg and remaining gas: 77.6 miles
My conclusion is that the gas gauge is completely inaccurate at the lower end. When the gauge reads practically empty, the tank still is 18% full.

That sounds about right from what I've observed. Essentially nearly a 20% built in safety margin. I personally would rather have it be more like 5-8%.

Why? If you know, you know. And Honda isn't the only company that does that. I had a Suzuki SX4 that turned on the gas pump icon and a zero range with at least 2 gallons left. 8% "safety margin" of a 10.6 gallon tank is less than 1 gallon, maybe 40 miles. That's a skimpy safety margin.

She waits until the light goes on? My wife starts getting nervous at a half tank; under a quarter tank she's out of control until it's filled again. If she ever saw a fuel light she'd probably have a coronary.

Haha, yah, kind of this a lot too!

What kind of driving do you do? City? Highway? Mix? I seem to only be able drive ~240 miles before my light kicks on. This is of course driving mostly in the city with stop lights.

Filled up on my way home from work today, with one tick showing on the gas gauge. Relevant numbers:

I just bought a new 2016 Honda Fit about a month ago (automatic cvt, LX model). I have a little over 1000 miles driven on it. I love the car, but am a little curious about the fuel guage compared to the actual amount of fuel left. Let me give you an example based on my last fill up: I was able to drive about 230 miles from full tank to the empty gas light turning on. My car said I got about 35-36 mpg between fill ups. This was about 3/4 city driving, so I didn't expect to get the full 400 miles that specs said I should be able to drive, but 230 miles seems very low. Anyways, I filled up with the empty light on (2 ticks left on the gauge), but, according to the gas pump, I was only able to fill up roughly 7.5 gal of the 10.6 gal tank the Fit has. I understand that the empty light gives you some wiggle room, but 3.1 gal worth of wiggle room? Is the tank smaller then the specs state or is the fuel Guage not calibrated correctly? Is this normal in Honda Fits? Would love other 2016-15 owners to chime in and let me know if this is normal and the way things are supposed to be working. Thanks!
Anyone else having issues with the mileage not being correct? I do 14km and I go down one line , then 40 km down 2 lines. If you had this issue how did Honda fix this?!?

I find that my Fit (CVT) doesn't do that well mpg wise in the city where you have to deal with mistimed lights and a lot of stop and go traffic. I get around 25 mpg in these situations which is not that great. But I didn't buy the Fit for the limited amount of city driving that I do. I bought it for highway cruising which it excels at - actually got over 500 miles on 1 tank.

I would say in my limited time with my almost new 2016 EX cvt...
That I easily agree with many of the observations here.
That is the gas gauge low fuel warning light is nearly ridiculously conservative.
And that there is a really big gap between City MPG and Highway MPG.
I am also getting "good" for ICE vehicles city mileage...but not phenomenal.
But on a highway road trip?
The MPG bump up considerably...on a roughly 300 mile round trip recently, mostly all freeway...55-70 mpg I was able to return upwards of 45+ mpg.
So I would say very, very good Highway MPG.
Good for what it is, -sub-compact- City Mileage...but not anything above what is considered the norm for and from most competitors.
Of course where I live now, it's winter, with winter blend fuels, and cold temperatures..so I would expect dip in MPG especially with short, around town trips.

I read this thread with interest. I am on my first tank of gas, included in the purchase. I would like to know which indicator or method I should use to assure myself the tank is almost empty? Please don't suggest that is not a good idea. The "low fuel indicator" showed up when the fuel gauge was showing 2 bars, and the "range" in the information display shows 25 miles. Which indicator is trust worthy? I prefer to minimize my trips to the gas stations.
