the 2,667-pound coupe will use a 2.0-liter flat-four engine that makes 197 hp at 7,000 rpm and 150 lb-ft of torque at 6,600 rpm. If those numbers stay true, it should be a pretty sweet performer.

LOL... those DSMs were something indeed. Pricier, but I've always wanted the 300ZX twin turbo from that era. The 350/370Z just isn't the same.

Car&Driver did a story on the new Subie version. The specs I read were ever so slightly different...2800 lbs and just north of 200 whp (expect 210 or 220) and 170 lb/ft. Those are actually pretty good numbers factory. Honda's gift from the gods, the K24a2, squeezes out 210 whp and 170 lb/ft with the conservative factory tune. With cams, 250 bhp is doable and with pistons...280+ bhp is doable. I think this will be a real tuner's car because Subaru really hit home the message that the majority of money and R&D was focused on perfecting the suspension. The eyebrow raiser of the article was the quoted city MPG....19????
The theme of the article though was quite interesting, because you get the sense that Subaru is a little butt hurt that Toyota has stole most of the media spotlight. Per Subaru, Toyota merely wrote the checks while Subaru's engineers put in the long hours.
Lastly, in regards to unimpressive hp numbers, Subaru's retort "That's what the STI is for". Granted, it is harder to build a cheap, light, and fast car today than it was 20 yrs ago...especially factoring in the weak $. Having said that, I bet a "R version" will also be available through TRD or Subaru's equivalent tuning arm. But at what cost?
This car will start at $28,000. The 800 lb gorilla in the $28,000-30,000 room is the 5.0 GT Mustang. It dominates everything under $40,000 (even the STI and EVO GSR) on Car&Drivers "Hot lap."

This is for the AWD Subaru version?
If Toyota can keep the cost a little lower I might be sold on it (pending test drive of course). Specs look like it'd be fun, not a rocketship, but definitely fun.
I wonder if it has LSD available?

yah, the $28K kills it for me for the subaru version but if scion's one is $22-23K for the base i'd interested. the appeal for me is lightweight, RWD, and cheap.
thing is if im going to be paying near $30K i rather just spend another $10-15K and get something nice like a 135i or next gen G coupe.

Because no car is produced indefinitely. Because Honda decided it was no longer profitable to keep the assembly line running. Because Honda decided the company was moving in other directions.

Personally I cant wait to drive this car when it comes out, and so far I am leaning towards the Subaru version… I actually like the interior, I have heard some gropes about it from other message boards…
Overall it will come down to a couple factors for me..
1. Price, if it is a stones throw away from a GT 5.0 then that is a tough sell… the 5.0 is awesome
2. MPG… 19 city? for a 4cyl 2800 car? my 06 S2k got 20 in the city and that was a 2.2 with 40 more HP and weighed roughly the same
3. Driving pleasure, if is a hoot to drive and a fun little drift car then it might be my next car..

Actually it wasn't so much discontinuing as it was a continuation of it. It was never supposed to have a run as it did. It was originally built as just a 50th anniversary of Honda. Thankfully, it did have a run that it did though, but at the same time because of its run, people want a replacement. Just look how long it was between the S800 and S2000. That should tell you something about S cars.
