New speeding law in Illinois

I just found out about a new speeding law in Illinois. If you go over 30 to 39 miles over the speed limit its a class B misdemeanor, up to 6 months in jail and 1500 minimum dollar fine. Chicago Criminal Defense Attorneys - Legal News: 2011 New Illinois Speeding Law

Lately, I've been noticing that people in the Chicago area have slowed down a bit, with more people doing 65-75 instead of 75-85. I think the gas prices have more to do with this, though. Whenever gas has been north of $3.50 it seems that the speeds drop a bit.

Sounds like a good law. What reason would you ever had to do 30-39 over a posted speed limit?

Gas prices does have something to do with it but I think most people are just multi tasking and have no clue, a moment ago they were driving 70 and now 55. What I dont like is everyone following 2 inches off the bumper at 70 and all 4 lanes blocked because no one passing.

30 mph over speed limit is ALOT and dangerous!

I got caught going 10 mph over the limit in Illinois this summer. It cost me $500 --there was no option to admit guilt and pay the fine- I had to make phone calls & hire a local lawyer to represent me in court otherwises I would have had to take off work, fly to IL & appear myself.
the state is bankrupt and needs to make $$

I agree but going 55 on a 4 lane Interstate when every on is going 80 is more dangerous. I agree with the law but on the Interstate you have no choice except not to drive on it.

Sorry to hear about the ticket but it happened to my wife in Wisconsin in a car that was not capable of the speed they said and wrong color vehicle. Probably could have beat the ticket but made a few calls and had the ticket change to a parking ticket and paid half the price. Would have cost more for Me if she had to appear in court.

The only thing I see wrong with it is it's too lenient. Make that anyone going 15 over.

For me its 15 because I have a CDL and dont matter what vehicle I drive its all considered a truck. I think 15 over is good and Interstate 20 over. The problem is that every one follows to close and all bunch up in a row 10 cars each lane blocking all the lanes. People also like to multi task when driving and that should be included too. There was a survey done and found out that 70 percent of drivers cant drive on the Interstate right and surprised that there was not more accidents.

Looks like they've already bagged one under the new law.

Honestly, 123 mph on Route 59? Stupidity knows no bounds.

I've got to agree with whaap on this one.

Of course, some communities have taken the issue in their own hands. Witness this: New Speed Rules

Going 30-39 mph over the speed limit is ridiculous as well as extremely dangerous. Not only are you putting yourself, your passenger(s) if any as well as other commuters in jeopardy by risking serious bodily injuries and "even" death...
If everyone is zooming past you fine....move over to the right lane, so what if they tailgate you..let them go around you.... I think it's a good law and should be implemented in all of the states in my humble opinion for whatever that's worth...probably nuthin' =)

That is so funny, the way things are going I would not be surprised.

On the Interstate if you dont go 70 you will be cut off because your driving slower than the pack. People are aware of going 30 over and just hover underneath that. This week more people are slowing down to 60/65 since the fuel prices took another 35 cents hike this week. Any thing over 4 dollars seems to slow people down Ive noticed. The other problem is people slowing to go up hill thinking they are saving gas, they do 65 and slow down to 53 and get back on it. They havnt figured out how to speed up before the hill and coast down it keeping the momentum as they drive.

I drive around 64 mph average in a 55 mph limit and still get passed like I was standing still. I agree that 30 mile over the speed limits is dangerous, especially if there is traffic. I looked out my mirror and seen no one and change lanes to see a car passing me like I was standing still. At that speed there is no time for corrections and mistakes.
