I've been trying to read and teach myself about cars and the various systems (drive trains, transmissions, suspension, engines, exhaust etc), so take it easy on me. I've been reading up on exhaust and exactly how gases from the engine get expelled, and the diff. noise levels, restriction etc. However, can someone help tell me ALL the parts that make up a COMPLETE exhaust (at least in regards to our Fit)? So far, starting at the engine, I've learned about:

Header
Mid pipe
Down pipe
Muffler

But I know I'm missing some pieces I should research and read up on. Any help is appreciated!

 

Exhaust is basically a bunch of pipes that go from the head, eventually merge into 1 larger pipe, and exit away from the car. What people call these different segments can sometimes be pretty arbitrary. However, I also have not had the opportunity yet to learn which pieces are particular to the fit, and I'm only familiar with turbo applications (commonly manifold>turbo>O2 housing>downpipe>catback +/- a few pieces).

Also don't forget about resonators and catalytic converters (cats). Sometimes cats are incorporated into the header and are not their own segment.

 

Engine > headers > catalytic converter > mid-pipe > muffler

Sometimes there's a resonator or two between the cat. and the muffler to cut down on the noise.
