First New ZR1 Dyno

Corvette Forum member "Alvin" had not one, but two Corvette ZR1's to play with on a dynojet earlier this week. Word on the street and yet unconfirmed is that these two ZR1's were part of the group purchase of 5 made by Hendricks Motorsports team.

The first Corvette ZR1 to hit the dyno was this Cyber Gray car which had all of 30 miles on her. The bone stock SAE adjusted number came in at 530 rwhp and 508 ft-Lbs of torque. After making some tuning adjustments, they saw the SAE adjusted numbers rose to 567 rwhp and 532 ft-lbs of torque.

The second Corvette ZR1 was Black and unfortunately seemed to be having some clutch slipping issues which can skew the dyno numbers we're told. Alvin mentioned in his post that the guy who brought the car into PCMforLess where the dyno was performed said the car was acting fishy and smelled of "clutch". That's too bad for a Corvette with all of 200 miles on her. We don't see a sheet for the initial run, but read that it was 540 rwhp. With the tune, Alvin was able to boost rwhp an additional 17 but the clutch slip makes this a moot point.

Averaging the two Corvettes, you get 535 rwhp, which is on par with the 15% average loss rule of thumb. Alvin said that the stock tune was pretty rich as well as the fact that once the engines loosen up after a few thousand miles they will usually provide a higher base number.

The #'s are in! 09 ZR1 ARH Custom Exhaust and Vette Drs Custom Tune 598RWHP 549RWTQ
Nicky and Jose fabricated an 1 7/8 inch header, custom X pipe and free flowing cats for the car. With some basic tuning with EFI Live (not wanting to push this beast just yet since it only has 200 miles on it) and the 1 7/8 header the car made 598RWHP 549RWTQ! The Dyno sheet shows over 40 RWHP and almost 50 RWTQ over the entire power band! Incredible!!

Here is the dyno sheet:

We also tried an 1 3/4" header which showed a significant loss over the larger header. The larger header is the way to go.

We have left a lot more power on the table with the tune as again I only pulled the car a couple times on the dyno with the new ARH exhaust system and left a very conservative tune in it. Thanks again to Chad for getting me the software. The EFI Live software for the 09 ZR1 worked great. I personally drove the car after I tuned the car and I can say this thing runs great!

We have another customer picking up their new ZR1 next week. He is looking for an even more aggressive package. We are working on a custom pulley system and air box, both should really help this beast reach its full potential. I can tell you now that replacing the pulley is not going to be as easy as it is on a Magnusson but we think it will be possible with some creative designing.

Here are several pictures of the install:
