Tranny Problem
Ok, specifics first. I have a 93 Accord 10 year anniv. edition, automatic
tranny. Today I tried to put the vehicle into D4 from park, and it
wouldn't shift. The button wouldn't go all the way in. After putting my
key into the Shift Lock Release, the vehicle finally went into drive.
Drove it home, nearly 20 miles, at 65 mph. My RPMs on the tach never went
over 2900, the transmission didn't slip at all (high RPMS) and there were
no lights (check engine light or a flashing D4 would have been a dead
giveaway, neither happened) and the vehicle drove fine.
Once home, I put the vehicle into park and tried to put it back into
reverse, same thing. I did the Shift Lock Release again, and it worked.
Everyone I have spoken to believes the problem to be low Tranny fluid. I
am taking the car to a mechanic tommorow for an oil change and fluid
check. Is it low transmission fluid, or another problem altogether?

it's simply the interlock switch - nothing to do with tranny fluid.
clean or replace the switch & you'll be fine.

Most important thing you forgot to mention is the mileage. Maybe just
adjusting the linkage to the shifter will cure it. If your mechanic
knows Hondas, he's done this before. You might be overdue for a tranny
fluid change too, but it wouldn't normally affect getting out of PARK.
If you change the fluid, use only Honda Z1.

Re: Tranny Problem
Sorry, I did forget the mileage. It's at 126k.
I had the tranny fluid checked today, and it's full and clean.
Any suggestions other than what was said? And how much would a mechanic
charge to fix the linkage to the shifter, or change the interlock switch.
I know I sound like an idiot on this, but I have never had any
transmission issues in the past with any vehicle I have ever owned.

Just phone around your community, or ask co-workers who have foreign
cars where they go for service. You're bound to find a guy who's
Ex-Honda who runs his own place. It may be only a half-hour job.
About the tranny fluid. You should change it if it's due. Read the
service schedule in the manual. It can look great, but not be providing
much protection. Fluid is cheap, trannies are expensive.

Open the console, tie a rubber band around the solenoid
mechanism (in a way to allow you to shift.) Install the console.
If you don't carry any passenger that would remove the key at
60-Mph or no thieves that will reach in and steel your keys in
traffic or no one to use the gas to brake when shifting out of P
then don't bother with the repairs. :-)
