2000 I-4 Accord: Jerky shift
2000 Accord w 50000mi I test drove recently had slightly rough shift
going from 2 to 3.
Is this common for this model year and consdered normal or an omen of
things to come.
I though only V-6 automatics had transmission problems
going from 2 to 3.

Could be some fool put non-Honda tranny fluid in it. Cautiously ask the
vendor which type they used, and how long ago. If it was three years
ago, don't buy the car. The tranny is probably TOAST. Hondas with the
wrong ATF will shift like a slamming door, then die. It's still going to
cost you eight (or twelve by some people's standards) quarts of Honda Z1
to remedy the situation.

My guess is, the previous owner used an auto trans fluid that was not
from Honda.
Drain, fill, drain, fill, drain, fill, drain, fill (that's right, 4
times) using Honda fluid. Watch the problem disappear.

Geez,
My old 87 Accord used to kick like a mule when it shifted from first to
second. I always figured it was age and high mileage (300,000 KM) but since
I bought it used, I wonder now if someone had put non-Honda ATF in it. I
was young and didn't know at the time that Hondas needed special tranny
fluid, otherwise, I might have tried to fix it.

part that bothers me about that is it is only one shift point,
usually wrong fluid will affect all shifts and torque converter
lock-up, try flushing and see what happens, the i-4's had the same
problems as the v-6.

If in doubt, change it out. Even if the dealer changed it (and you have
it in print), it may have only been changed ONCE. YOu can change it
yourself, drive it a while, and change it again. Like Elmo said, up to
four times. I've done it twice on any used Honda I bought, no matter
what the history indicated.

Well it kicked at other shifts too but the first to second was the most
pronounced. Unfortunately, she's beyond my help now since I sold her and
the new owner drove the piss out of her. She's in a better place now. I
know have a 2003 Accord I-4 i-VTEC 5-speed manual and I love it.
