5 Car Review

they don't really say anything new that wasn't already well known, but what the heck. reader's digest version: Evo. not by a sorta-kinda margin, but by a very clear and decisive advantage.

Went to an Evo meet today. Still hate the EvoX. Its slow. Ive seen modded ones at the track running mid 13's@105mph. Hahaha! Same mods on a 8/9 would be mid 12's even 11's with WAY more MPH.

As ugly as I think they are, this one caught my attention today.

the new motor is doing incredibly well actually. folks have already gained 80 whp on an exhaust, intake, and manual boost controller with zero tuning. the 4G63 with MIVEC gained those numbers with the same parts, with a tune. so, part for part, the 4B11T is doing better than the 4G63.

got another chance to drive an X yesterday. it was incredible. the evo 9 has a 60/40 weight distribution while the X is 56/44. you wouldn't think it, but that improved distribution plus the AYC makes the car feel quite a bit more like a RWD. i assure you, the tomfoolery is still strong in this generation of evo, too.

I still say the motor is junk.
I saw a silver one run 13's at 105mph. Intercooler pipes, tubular manifold, BC, full exhaust and a tune. Wooooo. :o

i hear you. thing is it isn't quite fair to compare the two at this point in time. the 4G has 15+ years, the 4B has less than a year of regular operational use.

could you do me a favor and ask that guy what kind of tune he got? an AEM FIC that can do almost everything with the notable exception of not being able to advance timing or a PROcede or a Perrin Unichip? i only ask because there is no fully developed tuning solution for it yet (that i happen to know of), wheras the 4G has open source tuning available for it via openecu. i'm just happy that it an undersquare design.

indeed. must be a slow track, there are already guys running mid 12's. does he have the ability to adjust fuel, timing, and boost through the ecu?

Or just a slow Evo? And its not like the guy cant drive. Hes had countless drag set-ups on Starions, SRT4's, and Evo8's.

Hes not the only slow modded X though.

I dont know anything about his tune.
I havent asked nor do I want to. I dont really like the guy. Heh

here's an edmunds test on a tuned evo -
2008 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X by Vishnu Performance Systems.*

that car did a 12.7, others have already done 12.5, so in any event, the car isn't slow. just have to figure out how to lighten it.

Personally i like TopGear's conclusion of the Evo-vs-STi battle. Evo is the better car, but at the end of the day for some reason I would rather drive the STi. I have been in both and driven both, and the Evo has better numbers, better parts sources, better track times (most consistently), but i would still choose the STi.

here's one where they review the MR with the TC-SST.
2008 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution MR - Quick Test - Motor Trend
0-60 is a little slower to protect the transmission. i like the part where the author specifies that this is the best version of any dual-clutch/ sequential transmission thus far.

i also like the part where he talks about sliding the car around. it just takes me back to this past weekend. it was so intuitive, i really couldn't believe it. i thought that the yaw rate control would be a little intrusive, my experience so far with the car is that its SAWC is an enhancement and is very transparent. but, that;s just one guys opinion. the magazines talk about the somewhat twitchy handling in the slalom test, but i don't participate in gymkhana events, so it doesn't matter to me.

do you have a link to that on youtube or elsewhere by chance? my cable package doesnt include BBC america.

It was an old episode, I think it was the EVOVIII and the last model of the STI. I will look for it though. ;)
