Return of the AE86

I hope they do bring it over, but doubt seriously that it will actually wind up that cheap or that light. They need to slot it against an established rival which I believe will be Civic Si coupe. If you look at the Si coupe, it doesn't come near the price or weight targets, and it shares a common FWD platform with a mega-volume car, the base Civic.
Say it is RWD, Toyota would have to debut a new platform just for this low-volume car. If they were going to do it, I imagine MSRP would need to be much higher to justify the huge sunk costs. Even a cash flush Toyota would need to make some compromises to keep costs under control. Plus they would have a disruptive new model undercutting their entire line...
Not saying it won't happen, but TM is still a very conservative company at heart. To do something like the rumors suggest would be very risky and radical.

I was actually referring to the 2JZ comment. And there's no way Toyota would put ITBs on a car that's supposed to be under $17 grand. Wishful thinking, but I don't remember the last time any automanufacturer successfully put ITBs on any reliable mainstream vehicle and sold it in large numbers, even to a niche market.
Give it the Scion 2.2L based on the Scion/Camry 2.4L I4, a suspension based around the last generation MR-Spyder in hatchback form with styling cues from the Toyota FT-HS concept and call it a day. Easily sold under $17K.

It seems they are really concentrating on the price point rather than performance. Their aim of 2 million yen is forcing them to keep it light. They are even concerned that going from a 1.5l to a 2.0l would be too much weight. ugh.

Sorry this is been a while... but I had to interject. The New Miata is only 22lbs heavier than the previous NB model... and has a good bit more power. The NB (2nd Gen- 1999-2005) is usually considered the porky-er Miata due to its lower power to weight ratio. Sorry... just a miata lover! ;)
