Honda Civic 1.5 Lx

I bought a 1994 Civic last Fall and with advice
from this group have made several minor repairs.
This auto had very good care until about 2000 and
then nearly none for a couple of years which caused an
engine failure last year. The former owner had a 1995
Civic 1.5 installed. 80000miles on the 95 engine and
166000 on the Auto. This engine uses a LOT of oil, about
a qt. per tank of gas. Is there anything other than rings
that will cause this. There is no visible smoke from the
tail pipe. No leaks, no oil in plug wells. The car runs
very well, no trouble codes and Auto transmission works fine.
This car has become something of a project and I am
considering doing the rings if I can be sure that is
the problem. It has been 30 or so years since I
restored a 1959 MGA but that engine was very simple
compared to the Honda.
It looks like you can drop the oil pan on a Civic and
remove the head without removing the engine from the
car, Is this correct?
Thanks
Ernie

Re: Honda Civic 1.5 Lx

The leak could not be a oil pan seal. Camshaft seal. crankshaft seal.
Front balanace shaft seal. And water pump seal. Talk about ton of
money to fix all these.
My is 16 yr old civic LX. I don't kow spend ton of $$$ to fix all
these.

Be sure the PCV valve is working. A plugged one can cause high oil
consumption. Also, you could be burning oil and not seeing any smoke
because the cat removes the oil from the exhaust, at least to the extent
that it may not be visible.
