Blacking out my Exhaust on the Accord

Just started this today, but will be doing a few extra coats of paint tomorrow, and some light touch up sanding. Took off my muffler to drill two extra pilot holes to hold in the silencer(which I also painted black). I painted the entire rear section, exhaust can, and covered the Logo and the tip only. everything else is gonna be flat black. Wetsanded everything in the utility sink with a fine grit 3m sanding block sponge. Just gotta do a couple extra coats tomorrow. The paint is 1200 degree flat black bbq paint

couple in process shots

initial wet sanding

Made a silencer hole Template out of leftovers from the RR HID switch project

Drill points marked off and taped up for extra silencer bolts(prevents buzzing/rattles)

Test fitting silencer, note the gap around edges

Marking silencer bolt hole locations on inner silencer through pilot holes

Nice clean centered hole

all three mount points

Everything taped off for final wetsand and paint (keeping hayame logo and tip stainless

After the first even layer of 1200 degree paint, will do 4 or 5 total before peeling off masking.

Lemme know what you think, should be done tomorrow or friday depending on conditions. And no, its not sitting on carpet, its propped up on 2 exhaust hangers and the flange.

Hayame Version 1 Race, made in Japan. Its almost 100% straight all the way back from the cat, and theres only 2 bends in the entire piping, which are right at the rear section. You can't get these anymore. They have a new version thats a lil different, great exhaust. I think its 5 or 6 years old now. The sanding and painting is just to make it stand out LESS to cops, and fits my black/gunmetal/silver color scheme.

looks good. but dont you think the can would have been enough? oem pipes arent painted. are you trying to make it look oem/ sleeper?

i blacked out the face of my HKS CF/Ti canister on my IS. it was just too shiny for me from behind. almost looks oem from behind.

The exhaust is actually pretty quiet. Under 90dB right behind the car tested with a dB meter. using police measuring techniques it was 83dB. Because they have you test at 3-4k rpm with a constant pedal pressure like five feet back. So I am 12dB below california legal limit. When you know the exact dB your car gives off it pisses cops off. It has a big straight through resonator up front that keeps it quiet for a perforated core mandrel bent straight through. And with the AEM CAI and 8lb flywheel, and 14lb rims, its pretty quick for NA, and killer for canyon runs, and the suspension is modified valve dampening matched Koni Neuspeed SP3's and Neuspeed race springs dropped an extra inch in the front on lowest of 5 perch mounts, so it REALLY handles

My first exhaust ticket I got the signing officer said turn your car on lets see how loud it is, and my car was idling. Its totally quiet during slow normal driving, but when you are accelerating or decelrating it is low note smoothe. Very mellow low tone. WOT she screams though in high RPMs. When I am done I will post up some more pics and a video.

Sleeper is my M.O. I like everything to look as close to stuck with subtle things that only a car guy or gal would be looking for. Everything on the car has been modded pretty much, yet it resembles a stock accord with OEM kit and some dark wheels.

I would've had it powder coated.

powdercoating is usually what I use on EVERYTHING, wheels, swingarms and rearsets on bikes, exhausts, but its 10 times the cost of high temp paint. And another person I know just wire wheeled his muffler with 3 coats and 3 years later its still lookin good. With wetsanding and 5 layers of paint, it should last quite a while. It looks sooooo good flat black. This morning when I went to do the 2nd and 3rd coats before I even started painting it looked like it was ready to go on the car.

And the exhaust is really pretty quiet from the front section having a large perforated core resonator. Here's what it sound like with NO rear section, just midpipe with resonator.

and this is no muffler idle AT the rear flange

I try to keep my cars as quiet yet powerful and functional as possible. Possibly down the road the Fit may get a Vibrant Exhaust. Quiet, mellow note, but straight through as well, and already powdercoated black

So I wrapped it up today, popped it back on the car, and it looks really good. The silencer with 3 mounts sounds the same no matter what RPM you are at, quieting it down to all you can really hear is a light growl, but really you just hear the Intake now, Much more stealth. Still has decent power.
