Quick question. The highest shutter speed my D60 has with flash is 1/200. Does that mean that if I use a cactus trigger to use my SB600 off camera, I wont be able to shoot faster than that? Or if I set my camera to manual mode and set the shutter speed faster than that, will the flash still go off?

If it's like Canon then when in Maual uit probably won't let you go past the max high speed sync shutter speed. My camera stops at 250 when the flash is attached.

Well if I attach a cactus v4 trigger to the camera its technically not a flash, but will the camera recognize it as a flash and restrict the shutter speed?

It may not restrict you, but you'll start to notice a dark bar in part of the frame where the shutter starts to get in the way. That may not be a bad thing and can still be useful if the dark part is somewhere not important, but in general it's a problem. You can test it and see how far you push the speed before the bar comes into play, as some camera/flash combos fudge it a bit in actual use. Here's a good explanation of sync speed: lighting-practice: Sync-speed explained

@mikejet: I got that same bag! I keep my spare D200, manuals, Pocket Wizards, etc. in it mostly now, but good bag for the money.

Here's a recent shot of some gear from when I bought my Olympus e-420 for pocket duty a week or two back. It's really tiny -- cute, almost even.

Don't bother -- I just popped a Pocket Wizard on the Olympus and D200 and neither of them restricted the shutter speed to the sync speed. I'm sure the D3 would be the same, and the same would happen if it had been a Cactus trigger too. You should be fine.

Weird, I'm getting people saying otherwise on some photography forums. They said the camera will see the trigger as a hot shoe flash and that I still won't be able to go past 1/200. I'm thinking I might get a vivitar 285vh and use that and the SB600 off camera. Shooting with a D60 btw.

When I read up on it there was lots of talk of why the D40 is better because it can sync faster than the D60.

Looks like 1/200 is your max. On my 50D 1/250 is the max

So for my next purchase I can't decide. I want to get into portrait and wedding so here are my choices:

A. 24-70 2.8 L
B. 70-200 2.8 L IS
C. 85 1.8 and 135 f2 L

The problem with C though is that I would need two bodies.
Thoughts?

I'm planning to get a new lens. I'm looking at the 35mm Prime lens with 1.8f. These are better for indoor shots I am assuming. Anyone give any input?

The t1i is like the 7D. 1.6X crop sensor and has HD video recording. The 7D performs better in low light due to having dual Digic processors. The t1i is the Rebel version of my camera the 50D. The 5D is a full frame and you get a narrower DOF with it so keep that in mind. It also can't use any EF-S lens as those are only designed for crop sensors.

What camera are you using? I have a 50mm 1.8 that is good for indoors. Do you already have a flash?

No flash. Just a D40x. I'm looking to expand some gear later, but I have a wedding shoot to attend to. I'm hoping a better lens would help with the lower lighting. I'm not a fan of my pop up flash. Goal later is a Nikon D300s. I'll have to wait on that one though.

I'd pickup the SB900 before anything else then. I was going to buy faster glass before a flash but decided that maybe the flash would be better. It completely changes everything.

what's up mikejet. i've decided on the 50D. Know of any places where I can get this camera for less than msrp? Money isn't tight but I would like to not pay full msrp if other people know where I can get things cheaper.

Reasons I decided on the 50D:
More sturdy body than the t1i.
I do not need the video function of the t1i b/c my fuji s20pro compact can take sufficient video for my needs.

Thanks

Excellent choice! I love my 50D. I got mine from Amazon because I'm a Prime member so I got overnight shipping from them. I buy a lot of my gear from there.

Currently at $940.95 on Amazon for Body Only. That's cheaper than I paid. The grip to me is worth it but it does add weight. I'd get the Body Only then find the EF-S 18-55mm IS used for about $100. That seems to be the going price for them. That's enough to get started.

When I first got the 50D I only had a 50mm 1.8(Nifty Fifty) and had lots of fun but you might want something a bit more versatile and for the money, the 18-55 is one of the best lens Canon makes.

You will want a flash eventually too. I don't know how I went for so long without it.
