Man this thread is dead. Well anyways I went on a photoshoot with a friend of mine whos a pro. His pics inspired me to pick up a flash. He used two Alien bees b800's for these shots.

Checked out the Alien bees site and saw that the cheapest one is B400. Im a complete beginner but would like to take shots like that one day. Would a B400 be right for me? How complicated is it to use? If I dont buy the wireless recievers does the camera have to be corded to the light or what? Going to buy some camera stuff with my tax return.

Nah, you don't need AB's to learn to light. Start here first: Lighting 101
Work your kit up based on that and it's a good start.
And to keep the thread alive, here's some random shots from recent months.

Nice shot as always!
As for the flash, I already have a SB600 speedlight. Should I just buy a reciever for it and maybe an umbrella? For example if I wanted to take shots like the one in my sig? Would the SB600 provide enough?
Ive been looking at this kit which looks like a great deal. http://alienbees.com/beginner.html

Kyle has one AB800 i think. I'm pretty sure they can act as slaves, so they'll go off when your camera flash fires. So you don't need the wireless syncs if you go that route.

Really? So the AB800 plugs into the camera or what? How else would it be able to go off at the exact same time as the camera flash? I'm looking at the beginner kit which comes with an AB800, stand, umbrella and bag for $350.
Just did some more research (definition of slave lol) and found out it triggers when another flash goes off like my on camera SB600. Would that not cause a delay or what? I think an SB600 with an omni bounce on camera with an AB800 off camera would make some nice shots.

there is a delay, but light moves incredibly fast, probably faster than the electrons would move in a wire (i don't do circuits, so someone correct me if i'm wrong). Your shutter speed is only 1/250 of a second, and the delay is nowhere near being that slow. So there will be no noticeable difference.
Just keep in mind that the AB strobes need a power source, so you'll need a generator, an outlet, or some big ol' batteries.

One thing about slaving the AB, it'll go off with ANY flash, so that means if by chance you're somewhere others are taking flash shots it'll go off for those too. Best bet is to buy a sync cord and sync it straight from the camera. Higher end cameras have a PC sync jack built in, but if your's doesn't you can get a hot-shoe adapter from Wein that'll do the trick, and cheaply too.
