The extra bit of reach over the 17-40 is quite useful and the fast aperture even moreso in low-light situations or when you want nice bokeh. I've had mine for a month or so now and it was some of the best money spent. Only con is it's an EF-S which is only an issue if you go full-frame at some point.

im kinda waiting to see if a 5d mkII comes out soon or a 17-55 f2.8 is usm mk II that fixes the problems that the 17-55 has right now. but i agree with you the sharpness and the low light performance of the 17-55 is hard to beat. IMO which is arguable the 24-70 doesnt beat it (unless you have it on a 5d though)

That should be a good choice, I've been thinking about picking one of those up myself, however every time I get a tele-zoom I never use it. But I have their 18-50 f/2.8 and I've had the 10-20mm both of which are in their EX line like the 70-200 and I've been very impressed at IQ and build for the price.

lotsa telephotolenses hahaha!

i prefer sigma over tamron... Sigma is a very good substitute for expensive Canon lens. Never used a tamron but my friend have one and it looks cheap from the outside. thats just me hehehe
