I recommend a Nikon D40, its an entry level DSLR camera that takes amazing pictures and is very beginner friendly.

FYI Kyle has a D40, he's just awesome when it comes to lighting.

D40's a good cam, but it's being replaced by the D3000 that was just released. You'll probably still be able to pick a D40 up for a while, but the D3000 is going to be the better cam overall. Either is fine to learn on and will take good pics.

Yeah, that's basically my lighting. I spent 600 on my camera, and 1000 on my flash equipment haha.

I think you should get a vivitar 285hv flash. It's under $100 and you can just mount it to your camera, and bounce it off the roof for great results. You won't be sorry I promise.

I love my SB600 flash, I got it for dirt cheap when I got my D60. The stock flash sucks when compared to bouncing the SB600 off the ceiling. Still toying with it trying to find out what more its capable of.

Okay...I know they're not pics of my Fit, but these show you don't need an expensive SLR to take good shots. These were taken with my Nikon Coolpix. I got the higher model, but I didn't want the bulk of an SLR. And these are unaltered. Straight uploaded.

Sorry...the Fit's usually not clean enough for good shots. LOL! These were right after I got the car back from a fresh coat of paint.

I like the first pic. If you didnt want the bulk of an DSLR, you can get a compact one. They are like the point and shoots but with more options and you can still buy lens. Heres a guy who has one and he has some shots with it.

LUMIX LX3

If you want a small camera that takes great pictures nothing will beat a canon g9 or g10

i'm not too interested in the d3000. it's basically a d60 with more AF points and automatic CA correction.

i still have my 1/500 flash sync with my d40

Yes I'll take my D40 over any other crop body camera alone for the sync speed. With my cybersyncsbi can sync my B800 up to 1/1500 of a second. ANY other camera can only do 1/200 - 1/300 tops.

DSLR just means digital SLR. if they are both a D40 kit, the only difference is the price.

edit: make sure it comes with the lens.

The car was a little dirty unfortunately. Not a great edit, but it's my first time ever trying something like this.

$375 is too cheap I think, I'd go with something like this one:
Amazon.com: Nikon D40 6.1MP Digital SLR Camera Kit with 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor Lens: Camera & Photo

Atleast that one is FOR SURE legit.

More info on how you shot this?

it's two images blended. one flash at full power on left. 1/2 power on right.
pop-up flash on both b/c it had to fire the optical slave.

shot in aperture priority, f/4

it's a little hazy, i think because my uv filter is a little dirty. I should have just taken the filter off.

Okay, when you're shooting with the flash, don't shoot in Av, shoot in M or else it will be overexposed (sort of like your picture)

I've done this as well though, did you use a longer exposure and just manually fire it, or did you use trigger/receivers?
