opinion time...
i want to get an external flash.
would you guys recommend an sb-400 and 285HV, or just an sb-600? Both would be around $200. I do plan to do some off camera stuff, but i also want to bounce on camera when I am at family gatherings and such.

Do the SB-600. It's more flexible and powerful than the 400 and still works just fine for manual control for off-camera use as well. 285's are nice for manual use, but the 600'll give you that plus TTL compatibilty and a number of auto modes so it's just more useful I think.

thanks. that makes sense. i am kinda leaning that way.
my only worry is that i'll just want to shoot casually sometimes, and people might expect me to be more serious b/c of the bigger flash (If that makes any sense)
That wouldn't stop me from getting that flash though.

Dude, with any flash (even a 285hv), shots off the hotshoe are stupid easy.
This if from the first night I ever had it:
lol@my camera bag :P
If you want more even light/less shadows, just back up and move the flash forward a little bit.
Just takes common sense to find out how it works
As long as you bounce it off a roof, the shots will probably look good :P

No it is a sport but one of my fog lights cracked this winter so instead of paying the $100+ for a new one I talked to Ikona and he said he would fill in my fog light covers to make them solid for free since I come down by him so much and test fit things so I couldn't pass that up.
