I love those shoes. I bought these shoes back in 99-00 or so and I have a long history with them. They have been to multiple countries with me, they have worked multiple jobs with me, they have been to a few different schools with me, I've used them for everything from floor hockey to sure footing while cleaning frozen leaves out the snow covered gutters at the end of fall.... hell I even used them as work boots for over 2 years. Hell I've ripped the sole off and glued it back on....
They're still good for a couple more years, now days they only use use doing work around the house and things that involve lots of walking (hiking, things along those lines).

For the money it can be had for now-a-days it can't be beat, however if you already like photography and you foresee yourself liking it even more you may find the D40 and even the D60 limiting after a short while, this could go for most of the entry level bodies as well though.
Oh yeah, while I'm here, if there Nikon D40 is just a point and shoot and isn't recommended, what is another good camera that is similar to the D40 price-wise. Or just tell me that the D40 is all I need. Thanks everyone.

Why is it limiting? What the problem is with my Canon is that I have to develop the pictures to see the differences between different f-stops and its hard playing around with the little details when you can't see the result right then and there. I went to Best Buy and I saw the Nikon D40 and it looked nice, but I couldn't see anything in too much detail. Do you have maximum manual control or is it a pretty point and shoot. If I had a digital camera, I would get into it. I was also pretty happy (and disappointed) with the price, although $500 is steep. Remeber I don't want to get into proffesional photography, but I want to get good at it.

Hey C-Fit, I don't remember whether I posted this here, but a site I find helpful is
Steve's Digicams - Camera Reviews
It should help you learn what differentiates the various models.

Now this makes for interesting news in my opinion. We knew that Sony was manufacturing sensors for Nikon in APS-C at least, but this is the first I have heard of Sony making a custom sensor for Nikon in the top end pro camera segment.
Since the D3x won't sell in huge numbers even with a price drop, this only goes to show Sony's dominating sensory technology division and it's manufacturing capabilities.

Don't get me wrong, the D40 is a great camera and was my first DSLR. However it can only autofocus with Nikkor AF-S and AF-I lenses, or Sigma HSM and Tamron IF lenses. While pretty much every new Nikkor lens is AF-S, if you ever want to save money and use older lenses, or use Nikkor prime lenses aside from the new AF-S 50mm, you'll have to manually focus them. In addition, D40 does not do commander mode for Nikon CLS wireless flashes, not a huge problem unless you plan on doing some easy off-camera lighting. Also there is really no buttons on the back of the camera so to change settings you'll have to sort through some menus. Compared to something around the D80-90 range where you have buttons for basic controls, and the D300+ which has a button for pretty much every control so you can change settings on the fly. It's a DSLR with kind of point and shoot simplicity on the outside but you can easily take full control over it should you want to. However for the price they are new, the value on them is kinda shot in the used market. You might be able to find a used one for a steal. I traded a D50 for a D40 for a few weeks and sold it online for about $200 body-only to get a D60 instead before going up to a D90. I sold my D60 for ~$300 body-only.
Does this all apply to the D40X as well or just the D40? Whats the difference in the 2 and whats your take on the D60?

I'm not looking to upgrade anytime soon, the camera I have now is direct competition of the D300 and EOS 40D... any upgrade from here is gonna cost a ton LOL.
I'm just not real familiar with Nikon products, that's why I ask the difference in the D40 and D40X, as for the D60... one of my good friends picked up a D60 w/ 2 lens and a bag on a black friday special, I'm just interested in what he picked up.
