Wow, how'd I miss this thread?
I just upgraded from a D40 to a D90 and love it. It actually is probably too much camera for me, but I've always bought things that I wasn't qualified for. I've got an older 18-70mm Nikon lens and a 70-300mm Nikon VR. Spent too much this month (this camera and 3 new tv's), but I plan to get a 50mm 1.8 Nikon after Christmas and hopefully a fisheye + tripod in the future.
As much as people say photography's an expensive hobby, I don't quite think it's nearly as bad as modding a car. And I find it more relaxing (with less headaches) to take pictures!
For lots of elitists but great information, I tend to look at Digital Camera Reviews and News: Digital Photography Review: Forums, Glossary, FAQ too. They can be jerks, but it's got a plethora of good info and reviews. I check fredmiranda.com: Specialized in Canon - Nikon SLR Cameras, Forum, Photoshop Plugins, Actions, Reviews, Hosting and Digital Darkroom for info on lenses though.
BTW, Beach Camera and Buydig.com seem to be the same company and have great prices. It's where I got my stuff from and there's a promo on the D60 with a 18-55mm lens and 4gb sd card for $539.95 shipped. They tend to have the best pricing for Nikon stuff... Canon wise, I dunno as I've always been a Nikon fan.

Hey guys, I've been using a Canon F1 (film) and it is annoying having to go to some place to get the film, uhhhhhhh, developed. Anyways, what is the best digital cam for noobs that isn't a point and shoot and isn't something that a pro would use? Oh, and that isnt too expensive.

37k is nothing for a camera.... If you were to get into professional photography in like advertisements or fashion etc... The digital backs for some view cameras are upwards of 50k....
You wouldn't believe how expensive camera stuff is once you get into really really fancy stuff.
As for the film thing I loved shooting film but it really sucks unless you have your own darkroom to print and develop the film in.
Ohh and I saw a d90 commercial today makes me want a d90 bad.... D50 works fine but that D90 would be fricken awesome.
sorry this post was kinda all over the place......

Hey, Charlie, that is a great film camera!
I had one back when I was, er... in High School!
I have stuck with Canon ever since, using a 40D now. I still have a T-90 film camera, bought way back in 1986! That was certainly before your time!
I wish I had known you were looking... I just gave away a 20D!
I am trying to resist buying the 50D. Let us know how your search works out!

For the money it can be had for now-a-days it can't be beat, however if you already like photography and you foresee yourself liking it even more you may find the D40 and even the D60 limiting after a short while, this could go for most of the entry level bodies as well though.

I thought very seriously about the 5D when I bought the 40D, but thought the ultrasonic sensor cleaning would be nice, and the 5D doesn't offer it (yet).
Now I'm more committed to the APS-C format, owning the 10-22mm zoom and 60mm 1:1 macro.
I will likely hold off for whatever next year holds before upgrading from the 40D.
