question regarding a job

so i needed a job that was closer to my school (pcc). So I came across this place called British motors pasadena. the guy that owns it sells all these first gen mini coopers, clubmans, midgets...mainly mini coopers. He restores all of them himself before he sells em. I asked him if he's hiring, and he said, "do you do body work?" "Can you prep a car?" "If you can, come in anytime and prep some cars...how much you charge per car?" So...yes indeed, i can do body work. My question is; How much should i charge him per car? lol... I was maybe thinkin...i'll do this many cars for one mini cooper. that'd be sweet..

pros about the job..
free air tools to use, other free tools to use (car lift, motor hoist,) free paint jobs, free body work on my own car...or any car i bring in, free car garage

cons.
under the table.

I don't do body work so I don't know...

How long does typical body work take? Would an hourly rate be better then a per car rate?

i'd be wary of that.

i have no idea what detailers normally charge...so i cannot answer that

i say start high, then barter your way into a fantastic rate.

Go to body shops around that area. Ask what they normally charge for body work only.
Then go back to the guy with a similar price range, of course a little less due to the size of Mini's. See what he says.

Id be worried about that under the table thing though. I was payed that way for a little while when I was doing stereo installs. I didnt like it, so I left. Hahh

P.S. I love first gen Mini's. I see 2-3 every now and then around my area. So sick.

The pay depends on how good you are, of course. Good body techs typically get $35 per hour for custom work like a real minicooper on the east coasi but probably more on the left coast.
If you are really good and quick you should expect $50/hr but if youre that good you should open your own shop.
