That is totally up to those companies. Yes, we make record profits, but the governments also make a crap load as well from royalties, land, etc. I believe the Shell CEO said that they made 7+ Billion $ in the first quarter of 2008, but keep in mind that is only ~7% as they had to pay a royalty for all of their oil that comes out of the ground, pay land agreements, pipeline agreements to get the oil to a facility, processing, etc. 93% of the gross went to services, governments, etc. Also, depending on the company, what you make as a profit in one year will directly impact your following year. The better you do, the more money you have to spend to explore for new oil and gas, more money to drill new wells, more money to develop the properties for a higher recovery, more money to maintain and update existing facilities and sites. There are a lot of things that we have to pay for, environmental, maintenance, work overs, that a lot of people do not see. Depending on the type of oil you get and what other crap comes out will probably determine how much an area needs to spend to produce the oil. Things like H2S are dangerous and can kill workers or severely damage equipment if it is not outfitted with the proper protection. Replacing old facilities and pipelines are extremely expensive, but need to be done. I don't know how other companies operate, but the one I work at strives to do the best we can to get the oil out of the ground. Whatever we make, we will basically re-invest into our properties and explore for new ones to expand the business. We don't just sit on it and throw it around lol.

In all honesty, I hope the price continues to rise. Maybe some of these red neck 12 MPG truck driving fools flipping cigarettes out of their windows at me on my Ninja will stay the F at home. We can only hope...

If anything if the one day gas outs worked I think in the end the gas company would just jack up the prices ten fold to make up for their loses the day before.

Either way it doesn't work.

Well you can boycott for the day, but we all know you will eventually fill up your car one way or another. Next day, next week, it'll all add up.
