From personal experience Valentine One.

But if you drive smart you won't even need it.

V1 very good (as well as very expensive) in 49/50 states and the 3 Western Canada provinces, but for the rest, VA and DC in US, also if you're a trucker, the STI is the way to go

Having an RD in your vehicle doesn't in any way mean that you're a speed freak, of course it gives you a kind of superiority over the rest of the world, but mostly it allows you to know when and where the Uncle Sam/Big Brother is somewhere around you monitoring your movement while driving your own vehicle...
If you do a lot of driving, an RD (but never a Cobra) is a very good and smart investment

Any Cobra is of course a waste of money, but no way V1, STI, RX65, Passport X50...
And here is the best place to educate yourself about this very subject:

They are $400, not $500. You can get a "refirb" for $360.

Radar detector is gonna be pretty useless in Calgary
Get a laser jammer instead

RDs perfectly legal in Alberta and mounted very low in the windshield any very good RD will alert against all laser hits... cops with laser guns target: 1) front licence plate 2) if no license plate they go for the headlights 3) if no possible reading on the first two they hit the windshield or any other reflective thing on your car... the radius of the laser beam is just 9 inches wide at 500 ft and 18 inches at 1000 ft, so you need to have your RD mounted somewhere within this radius if you want to get all laser alerts...
LJs strictly prohibited everywhere in NA and the newer laser guns can tell if a laser jammer have been activated, and very expensive as well... any sharp eye can see your LJ's heads mounted inside the front bumper grill or anywhere in the front, including when your car is parked into the supermarket lot...
Laser Jammers, protection against police laser!

I currently use an Escort Passport 8500 X50 with red display. It retails for $299 and works better than V1.

Features
360-degree radar and laser detection
Advanced digital signal processing
AutoSensitivity mode automatically reduces false alarms
EZ-Programming allows instant customization
Selectable POP mode radar detection
3 High-resolution meter modes
Ultra-bright matrix display with 280 LEDs
Brilliant blue or high-intensity red display
Multiple high-performance laser sensors
Built-in earphone jack
Mute & AutoMute
Completely immune to the VG-2 "detector-detector"

Also, you will have to mount it near the rear view mirrow for optimal radar detection.

no i don't use them in my car while i drive in the city, sometimes on the highway outside of the city
i know where most of them usually hide and been lucky a few times, i've never gotten a ticket by radar, only by ghost cars
and it's easy to pick out the photo radars on the side of the road especially on deerfoot

Yes you're right, LJs are legal to use in most of the states, illegal only in Minnesota, California, Utah, Virginia, Illinois and Colorado...

Radar Jammers Recommendations

RJs are illegal everywhere in US...

Radar jamming is a felony landing you in jail

I don't know about Alberta where friends288 lives, the Alberta Hwy Trrafic Act should have this issue explained very clearly...
