What have you learn from the past 10+ Snowy days?

I was trying to get snow tires from Canadian tire and they said they are all sold out, and the manufacturers are not making them until next year. wtf.....
there IS something money can't buy~!
otherwise I found the Fit quite accomondating in the snow.....it's only the problem of getting out from the small streets....

i have learned to turn the wheel back and forth to get the rear of the car whipping out side to side a little to get the rest of the drivers to back the hell off. just cause they are in a huge 4x4 truck doesnt mean they can still tail gate me.

well, with the heavy rain coming down, the snow is melting FAST!
when i was coming home, driving on hwy 1, there were HUGE, i mean GIGANTIC puddles (ponds). Also on lougheed and pintree there were literally ponds. Many cars hydrolocked as I see them park at the side w/ their hazards on.
SO....don't try to be like a rally driver! don't hydrolock!!!

This has nothing to do with the Fit itself, but i think it will behave the same....
I got stuck in the snow once in my dad's Corolla, and one wheel was in the snow while the other front wheel was on dry pavement. I gas it and only the wheel in the snow was turning. I bet if the one on the pavement turns as well I will unstuck myself.
Why is that? I think it has to do with the differentials but what's the theory behind it?
btw, i was resued by two passer-by, but I was wondering is it possible to use tow hooks and get the Fit to pull another vehicle out of the slump? The Fit's bumper do have sockets for hooks....

Differential (mechanical device) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Limited slip differential - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
I can clearly feel the two front wheels(w/snow tires) trying to pull myself out from snow/ice/slush these days with my limited slip differential. But there're still times that the snow pack is soooooooo thick that the tires are not touching the ground(even fresh snow will help as long as there's something the tires can grip on). Most passenger cars have that problem due to lack of ground clearance anyway.
So if u guys don't have snow tires, try to get them ASAP. They do help u a lot to get the car going & slow down safely.
On the other hand I really think u shouldn't pull someone with your Fit. Most cars with unibody design should NOT do that. Leave that to the pickup trucks & jeeps with strong chassis, bigger torque to do it.
Btw keep calling places so far I still hear some places have yokohama, toyo & michelin snow tires in stock. Also try calling dealerships. Coz they usually stock a LOT of snow tires(of coz the popular sizes)every winter.

btw, is it truely absolutely necessary to change all 4 tires? I know there's a video lying around showing how you will lose control when braking, but that's when you are trying to turn. I just thought we usually stop in a straight line....anyone had only the front 2 replaced?

Hey thanks~!

Yes it is necessary to change all four tires into winter/snow tires instead of two snow+two summer/two snow+two "all season", no matter u have a vehicle that's FWD/RWD/AWD. Tire places are not trying to upsell u or anything. That's mainly because modern vehicles at least got ABS nowadays(and then EBD,TCS,VSC...yada yada the list goes on).
Now imagine one of your feet is wearing let's say some Clarks/Aldo leather shoe, & the other foot u got some decent thread Caterpillar/Red Wing/Timeberland outdoor boot. U would be really careful too(your brain acts like ECU+ABS+EBD+TCS) coz u don't have acceptable grip on the side w/leather shoes(all season/summer tires), which may cause YOU to slip & fall even u got outdoor boot on the other foot(snow tires).
When u're trying to brake in a straight line, the harder u brake, the more the rear end of the vehicle will lift up. It's more noticeable when u're going downhill too! SO if u got all season/summer/poor condition snow tires at the back, u r gonna feel it.
If u use same kinda tire all around & try to brake/lift throttle around a corner in dry pavement, u can get snap oversteer/spin a FWD car around too(dorifto at the wrong place is NOT COOL!)! Let alone wet/snowy/icy condition......
