Tail Of The Dragon

I had the opportunity to run http://www.tailofthedragon.com earlier this week. Needless to say, it was a BLAST!!!

I mounted a Sony Handycam for a run; however, I don't have the original software so I'm not really sure how to get it on my computer to upload. Any suggestions??

Everyone should have the opportunity to go run this road - 318 curves in 11 miles!!!

I go to university in Cookeville, which is about 2 and a half hours away from there. I plan to head out there sometime to give it a whirl.

Did that with the S2000 club (s2ki) in April with 170 cars. It was a blast!

The only issue that I had was slower traffic. I got behind an Escalade - the retiree was pushing it as hard as it would go, which was funny to watch, but it still took some of the fun out of it.

There were some guys on sport bike who were behind me for a while. I would pull away from them in the curves, but they would be back on my butt on the straights - which are very few!! For the most part, I could stay ahead of the sport bikes without too much difficulty.

Saw a bunch of Miata's (maybe 15-20?) of them, and the were all smiling!

Some of the bike riders took some risks that I thought were kind of dumb - passing in curves, for example. When stopped to take it all in one time, I head a guy on a bike "lose it". Several others hopped on their bikes to go find out what happened. Guy had run into a tree, and didn't really hurt anything more than his pride, fortunately!!

definitively looks like fun.

Maybe not as difficult as the mountain courves here in Puerto Rico, but the scenery should be awesome.

Maybe I'll count the curves on my journey home from Jayuya, PR, to PR-10(the downhill)

I am now curious....

I was reading the archives for that site and in the 2003 records i read about this
"Escaped Monkey heads for the Dragon... Nearby Campbell County TN residents reported seeing a 3-1/2-foot-tall primate. The monkey might weigh approximately 80-100 pounds. One person who lives in the area had 83 cats. "She's now down to nine." Rumors abound about a mysterious entity that is lurking around the area and how it got there. One theory is that it escaped from a circus that was in town a few weeks ago. We think it is the ape that escaped from a Graham County exotic animal keeper several years ago. Riders in the area should keep an eye out for the ape."

omg lmao

I go on fun runs a lot. I know it burns fuel, and yeah, I don't care. But this is a good data point to have, if not in this thread, then in the "gas mileage" thread, but no "recreational twisty drivers" replied in that thread, so I'm asking in this thread. I'd even like to know how autoxing affects the Fit's mpg. Because at the end of the day, the Fit is (supposed to be) a low cost fuel efficient commuter. If I really had to have a blast in the twisties or on the track, I (and some others on here are in the same boat) wouldn't be selling my car.

I am with you on this one. I report averaging 31-32 MPG, but I do a lot of twisty drives, every day BTW (go to work), and plan to go solo-1. plus have done some track laping to check it out and that MPG average is considering all this ocasional abuse . So don't know how some got low 20's driving like nanny's when I tho I drive as low as I can, That ain't too much because fun is more important. I do coastin when I can and 2k to 3k RPM's whenever I can, but the twisties I drive, and the highways I drive offre so many oportunities to have fun whit this little auful son of a POKEMON!!
wHEN i DRIVE LIKE MAD, i DON'T COMPLAIN FOR THE FUEL and when I drive like a nanny, I dont have to.

US129 in Tn and Nc is the greatest enthusiast road you will find east of the Rockies

The S2000 group has two gatherings there every year;both in the spring and late summer.

It is like driving an 11 mile auto-x course in the Great Smokey Montains

I suppose that I'll have to appologize for not checking my mileage on The Dragon. What was I thinkin?? LOL!

I ran an autocross the weekend before, and got 5.9 mpg on three straight runs, each.

I was able to check with my ScanGauge II.

FWIW - I didn't see a tractor-trailer on the Dragon. I did see a couple of RV's go by when I was at Deal's Gap store. Felt sorry for whoever got stuck behind them!

Maybe we can arrange a Fit get-together at the Dragon sometime next Spring/Summer??

I wasn't asking for an instantaneous reading. Just how it affected the numbers at the next fillup.

It was combined with other country road and some interstate. I ran about "normal" - meaning that I got around 32 mpg for the tank.

If I do my road trip next year up to the DC/Virginia area, I might have to take a detour into KY to run the Tail 'o the Dragon... I bet it would be a BLAST!

Be careful!! The ToD is on the TN/NC border!! It is a bit of a haul from Kentucky!!

Seriously, from Texas, if you are going to DC area, just do I-30 out of Dallas to Little Rock, then get on I-40. ToD is south of Knoxville on US-129. You can follow it and hit I-81 into the DC area.

Happy Tails to you!!!

If you can't find your software for your camera, go to Sony's site and you should be able to find it as a free download. If not, hit up some A/V forums, and I'm sure that plenty of people would be able to help you easily.
