Fit trunk cargo space vs Mazda 3 and Golf

I have a 2007 Fit and was able to easily fit 3 full sized suitcases upright in the trunk with room to spare (rear seat backs still upright). There was room left over so I may have been able to fit a 4th suitcase and definitely would have been able to fit a carry on bag in addition to the 3 suitcases. For my next car, I am considering either a 2015 Fit, 2015 Mazda 3 hatchback or a 2015 VW Golf. How many full sized suitcases can fit in these cars with the seat backs upright?

What do you mean by "full-sized?" A 22" x 14" x 9" max-size carry-on size suitcase? Or larger?

It's the 30" one that is the largest one in your picture

If you can give me the width and depth I can help a bit more.

The afternoon we bought our Fit, the salesman watched us drop the tailgate of an 8-foot bed and proceed to load a Fit with cat carriers, ice chest, and other stuff. We were doing that for a good half hour before we even sat in it. If you really want to know what fits, that's a good way.

They are around 32"x 18"x12". I'm curious to see if they would fit in the trunk of a Mazda 3 since the hatch slopes quite a bit

I'm giving you worst case numbers here: 40" between the wheel wells,
gets a little wider behind them.

23" from tailgate to seat back at the floor, that's on the sides
it's a little longer in the center

15" from the top of the seat back to the top of the tailgate (below the glass). The hatch slope is also going to impact you here because at 30-32" up, it'll be even less.

32" is pretty close to the top of cargo bay... there's some extra but only an inch or two IIRC.

Looks like you'll be limited to two unless you can fold down one side of the rear seat back.

Unless you do this frequently, I'd opt for a smaller, higher mileage car, and take a taxi to the airport or train station.

Hope this helps.
