Fuel gauge reading on startup

Hello,

I have a general question regarding the accuracy of the fuel gauge reading upon ignition. I drive a 2007 Fit Sport.

Upon ignition the fuel gauge rises to a certain level. My question is as follows: Is it possible that immediately after ignition, the reading of the fuel gauge could be slightly higher or lower and then stabilize after a few minutes of driving? I know this is the case for larger trucks that I have driven but does it hold true for the Fit? This question takes in consideration the car was started on level ground.

I haven't noticed any discrepancies in the fuel reading from this on my Fit (and I vaguely recall noticing it on some other vehicles). That may mean that it's accurate, or it may mean that I haven't paid super close attention to whether it moves a little or not.

At any rate, the gas gauge is sufficiently accurate when first starting for most practical purposes. It's not as though it's precisely calibrated and reads in gallons of fuel or anything. For greater precision, you can use the tripmeter and the average milage display (if you reset the trip meter at each fill up); dividing the trip distance by the average milage gives the number of gallons used, and a bit of subtraction gives what's left in the tank.
