changing the wheels before buying to avoid theft?

Hey guys, first post here so I hope I did it right.

I was planning to get a brand new Fit Sport in a few weeks... but... dang it I just found out today that the Fit Sport 16" alloy wheels are a favorite to get stolen from where I'm at (Chicago).

So I'm wondering, are thieves looking specifically those wheels? If so, is it possible to even downgrade my wheels to use the base model....... or maybe upgrade them while being able to sell the old ones back at the dealership?

I don't mind shelling out an extra 500-600 bucks just to get better set of wheels. Heck, I want something stable and highly resistant to rain and snow.

I will get wheel locks either way. I know it's cheap.

Thanks everyone!

Edit: Okay thanks for your input. I probably am overthinking it.. here's a new question... How much do tilt sensors cost? Should I ask a dealership to install it when I get it or do it somewhere else?

i thought s2k's are the most popular stolen auto/auto accessories now?

anyway, i believe you might be over thinking it. just get some wheel locks and park it in a well lit area that looks patrolled and you'll be fine.

It's certainly possible to put the base model wheels on a sport fit (and vice-versa). Naturally the tires won't interchange between the wheels, since they're different diameters. If you do that, you'd probably want different (or no) wheel covers than the OEM base model ones, which are ugly and on the cheap side.

Overall, though, I agree with SieGunso—get the wheel locks and stop worrying. Car theft (and car part theft) is largely a crime of convenience: what gets stolen is what is most easily available and most easily fenced. You can't affect the second part yourself, but wheel locks do change the first part a lot.

wheel locks provide added protection, but they could still manage to take them off without the actual key.

i would just keep your stock wheels until stolen, then buy aftermarkets. you have insurance, right? use it.

I'm not going to carry my phone because i'm afraid it might be stolen.

Doesn't matter the wheel, our fits are a 4X100 bolt pattern so they'll fit most older civics. If they really want the wheels they'll get them. You can get any wheel lock off, they just slow you down a bit.

I'd spend the extra money on a good quality alarm if anything, Clifford is a great brand. Even then as I mentioned it will only slow them down a bit if they really want it.

Hey everyone.

Thank you for all your input. I guess I'll leave it stock with wheel locks. If anything bad happens, I'll get insurance involved.

I just have another question... what's a good tilt senor that won't cost too much while being reliable? Are dealership ones good? If it's not too expensive, I'll do that and rest knowing I did my best.

Thanks again.
