Top speed

I read on anther thread that someone got to about 125mph and I also read it is limited to 115 in there usdm Fit. I put those theories to test this morning and was suprised. On a slight hill I got up to about 120 before slowing down and it actually got there pretty quick. A little later I tried it again on flat road and I got to 105 fairly quick and then it seemed to hit a wall. It moved to maybe 107 after about a minute..didnt seem limited, but only by drag. I only have an intake so hp is definetly not more than stock. Does anyone have any other results?

If the US Fit has a governor on it, I think that would be the first ever Honda to be sold here with a governor. Drag and engine power are the limiting factors here. Obviously, a tailwind helps the drag issue, and hills help power.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Fit is in the 115-120mph range. My old '89 CRX Si (almost identical HP, though a smaller car) went easily past 125.

So...
If there's no governor......

What is it that makes the engine start to... erm... sputter? (stop running beiefly then pick up again) when you red line it (Sport AT using the paddle shifters...)?

I did that for the first time last night... someone was making fun of my little car having no horse power... so I popped it into S, pulled the left paddel to force it into Manual mode... and it redlined... and started ... doing THAT....

I guess... before - if you just put it in S... it'll shift once you hit redline - and if you pull the upshift paddle the same time it shifts it'll skip a gear - that's what I was trying to avoid...

Just a thought... haven't had mine over 95.....

That's the rev limiter. It cuts out the ignition when the rpm's get too high, i.e. past redline on the tach. It's got nothing to do with your speed per se, just how fast the engine is turning. It's the cars way of telling you, 'I'm not happy anymore, please shift me into the next gear...'

In theory, your top speed for any car is however fast you are going when you hit redline when in top gear. In practice, most cars don't make it that far because there's not enough power in top gear to get to it all the way to redline........

There is quite an unusual fascination on this forum with respect to Fit top speed...

It only goes 70... REALLY!! It does!!
That's the speed limit!
(And if it ever goes back to Ohio, it's gonna lose 10MPH in performance!!!)

Had that happen a couple of times. If you dont pop into the next gear as it touches the redline, the tranny will automatically. And, if you hit the right paddle as that happens, BAM now you've shifted twice. As far as this thread goes, I hit 120 once with pedal to spare on the flat (not sure which way the wind was blowing) and didnt dare go any faster as I just got my insurance reasonable. So, riding solo it tells me that if I had additional throlle available, I could have in fact gone faster. If anyone has more guts, or lives in the middle of no where, let me know. Oh, and please dont comment if you have a problem with testing the upper speed limitations. If you have a problem, then this thread probobly isnt one you should post in.

careful on these runs. at high speeds, things can go wrong VERY fast.

on a related note, one time my limiter kicked in when i didn't even redline it. i think i stepped the pedal funny at first gear that it estimated that i would hit the redline evn tho i was just 3000rpm.

I for one wanted to test out these theories and speculations and prove that the M/T USDM Fit is limited to 115mph.

On a closed undisclosed 6 miles stretch of asphalt....
I repeated this process 5 times to be positively sure.
relatively flat road. no one around.

*4th gear to redline, 5th gear until 115mph...BAM power cut out.
(when power cut out occurs speed dropped down to around 100mph.)

*left it in 5th kept pedal on the floor...109, 112, 114...115mph BAM cut out..
(it's kinda harsh btw but still very electronic)

***Repeated process 3 more times with identical results...
even though as it was pulling to 115 there was a noticeable bit of power. the electronic governor kept vigilant in keeping the speed under 115mph.

Car was surprisingly stable for a vehicle with a relatively short wheelbase.

SO BASICALLY TO FOREVER ANSWER THE ACHING QUESTION:
Yes,

USDM M/T Fits are in fact electronically limited

to 115mph.
but you probably already knew that.

what rpm were you at each time when the power cut?

I had my MT on the way to AZ last week (all stock, 9K miles) and after cruising 80-90, decided to see what it would do....I saw 112-114 and that was it....of course it was kinda dark at 3am so I don't know if I was on a slight uphill or downhill..... It was pretty noneventful-it didn't even wake my son up..... BTW I averaged 32 mpg on the trip, probably would've done better if I could have stayed under 85.....

no American honda has ever been speed limited, so the Fit would be the first if it realy is, all Japanese Hondas are limited to 115mph tho

there is a rev limmiter set 200-600 above the redline on the tach, so depending on gearing its possible you hit the rev limit

I agree. That would be a first for Honda.

A rev limited wouldn't drop your speed as in his description. It would just stop you from accelerating further.
