high mpg (I hope--some postings here make it seem a crapshoot)

magic seats/huge cargo capacity is very versatile

Honda reliability, reputation, and corporate commitment to environment (better than most auto manufacturers)

closest thing I could find to replace my '87 Toyota Tercel Wagon which I bought new and still drive today (and will until my Fit arrives)

have not test driven one yet--but with rave reviews and many satisfied Fit owners gushing on websites like this one, I'll give it the benefit of the doubt

UPDATE AFTER OWNING FOR A FEW MONTHS:
Yes I'm getting good mpg (38+ in a base MT)
Versatile interior is fantastic. Great for hauling music equipment or whatever. Conversion between modes does is easy and will not hurt your back--excellent design for all age groups!
Gotta love how it drives, it is fun and feels very solid and safe.
Everyone I show it to is envious.

Through the example of the spoon racecar, a simple underdog platform to create one bitchin competitive racer. It reminds me of when the civic platform was introduced and look at it now.

The reasons are several for my choosing the Fit.

1. better fuel economy. Even though I don't drive a lot, saving some money here will help. I average 21mpg in my current car. It sucks having to drop 12 gallons it it every ~250 miles.

2. I like the shooting break styling. Not a lot of people do, but I kinda like the hatchback

3. flexible interior. I don't often haul stuff, or people, but it will be nice to have, since I expect I will keep the Fit until it's paid off, and I drive the wheels off of it!

4. It's a HONDA. 'Nuff said.

5. Handles great! I love a car that handles great, even if it's not uber fast.

6. Should save me some money on my car note, allowing me to focus on other debt for a while.

1. Car and Driver rated it #1 in their comparison -they usually get it right.
2. Utility: I know Americans typically hate hatchbacks, but they provide the best use of space. The magic seats are uh-maze-ing.
3. Reminds me of my first car (88 accord LXi), simple and smart.
4. Price vs. options. Incredible interior for its class.
5. Ridiculously fun to drive, and it's fuel efficient.

there is one missing on the list... My answer is that the fit fit my check list the best.... I would have bought an element but it seats four and the gas mileage is poor.

-safetey! i have a better peace of mind in my wife's safety when i see her off to work
-good enough gas mileage
-it's roomy
-it's a little yet big car (this helps with stupid drivers not being able to see you when making a lane change, it happens to me alot in my 92 civic hatchback)
-utility of a hatchback but with 2 extra doors
-peppy for what little power it offers
-it looks pretty good for being so tall, i've never been a fan of tall cars but this one looks good

1. Excellent safety design standard feature
2. Versatile design for passengers and cargo
3. Fun AND fairly good on gas mileage
4. I love to be different and not like the "rest".

The design reminds me of my first honda, a 90 CRX. I dig the gas mileage, and I am a certifiable Honda head for life..........unless they do something crazy like change their design philosophy. The understated look of a Honda seems to last longer and is more timeless than more trendy looks by other auto makers. To each his own...

All of the above

Seriously, these all have an effect (in no particular order):

- made in Japan
- great handling
- magic seats
- air bags and safety
- it's a Honda
- the wife thinks it's cute
- gas prices are rising
- rare and special, but tsill has proven reliability (tested in Euro/Asia for years)
- hatchback

Fun to drive & own is why I love it, but I bought it for its versatility and practicality -- and because it's a Honda, I knew it would be reliable.

Question Road Noise

I adore my Fit, but if I could change just one thing about it, I'd do something about the road noise. Had the same problem with my Accord ('95). The Fit actually does a lot better than the Accord at shutting out the noise from other vehicles, which surprised me, but the road noise from the Fit at highway speeds -- come on, Honda! You can do better! Before I found the Fit, I test drove a Forester and an Outback and thought the wind noise was bad in both and the Outback's engine was noisy. The Fit's engine idles so quietly it's barely there, and I don't mind the transmission noise at all when I accelerate. Most of the noise seems to be coming from the tires. That road noise seems to be the main criticism of the Fit in most of the test drive articles I've read, yet at the same time they don't call the engine noise "buzzy" like they do some of the Fit's competitors (like the Caliber). When I complained about my Accord's road noise, my mechanic suggested trying softer tires, but that didn't help. Anyone have a solution, or does Honda need to go back to the drawing board?

There's no one correct answer for my purchase of a Fit Sport. In no particular order:

1) Gas mileage
2) Small, but safe
3) Magic Seat...I can actually put my dog or a mt bike INSIDE without ruining the interior or removing seats, etc
4) Fun to drive...handles incredibly. Reminds me of my old CRX
5) Price...affordable and new. I looked at a number of used cars in the same price range
6) Aftermarket support (if I choose to go that route)
7) Did I mention it's a Honda? I've loved all my previous Hondas and they never let me down

The Fit has the best balance between being inexpensive, having good performance and being fun to drive. I really wanted a MINI Cooper, but the closest dealer is over 1.5 hours away, and I wanted 4 doors. I've never had a Japanese car before, but my father and brother both have had excellent experiences with their Hondas (Accord and CR-V).

1) Good on gas and takes 87
2) Japan built Honda quality
3) Great handling w/o mods
4) Great looks

It's a good practical replacement for my 1990 Integra. Finally, I can drive around without worrying what's going to break next. Plus, my DA is too low to drive around (4-1 header) and scrapes every speedbumps I encounter. So, time to get a true daily driver and go nuts with the DA

PS. I'm trying my hardest to resist modding the FIT, I don't know how long it can stay stock T_T
