2007 Honda Fit Sport insurance much higher than expected

I just spent over a week pricing 9 different companies for a combined homeowners and auto package for two cars. The differences between companies was unbelievable. The prices varied from $931 for all three per year to over $2800. The cheapest was a combination of USAA for auto and Indiana Farm Bureau for homeowners. The second cheapest was State Farm. I also priced Geico, Progressive, Nationwide, Allstate, American Family, Farmers, Liberty and 21st Century.
They will discount at varying degrees (usually 10 to 20%) for multi-car and another 10 to 20% for having homeowners or rental policies with the same company.
In our case no other company came close to USAA for Auto and no company came close to Indiana Farmers for Homeowners. So we did not take advantage of the discount for having both policies with the same company.
They also rely on Credit Ratings to a varying degree from company to company.
My point is to shop around. It does make a huge difference.

Truthfully there are still a lot of carriers outside of the ones that you just named (though of course those are among the most recognizable, or at least the ones with the most advertising and marketing). It's also helpful to go through an insurance agency too.

It's the same reason why my Evo IX costs more to insure than a Corvette with more than 100 hp on my car... because Evos get stolen more, have younger drivers who are far likelier to get into accidents and accumulate tickets. It's statistically a riskier car (and more commonly driven by a demographic more likely to do dumb stuff), even if the Vette is more expensive and a lot faster.

Just joined the forum. Picked up a 2013 Fit base on Sunday (first new car)!
Anyway, first thing after finding the forum was see what insurance is running.
I'm on Geico and it jumped to $520/6 months for full coverage in Los Angeles. That's my wife and I, both 30 yrs old, employed, no tickets/violations.
I was driving a beater 1997 Volvo 850 with liability only for around $120/6 months in Portland, Oregon before moving a few months ago. I recall getting a quote for the Fit while on Oregon insurance and it worked out to about $375-400 for full.

It's because Massachusetts is one of the harshest states for insurance due to its Department of Insurance being uber strict. I think they have very few carriers there since the restrictions are so crazy.

I sold my Fit last summer and bought a Prius v. Insurance was a few dollars cheaper on the Prius. FWIW I was paying around $980 a year on my 2008 Fit with full coverage. One of the perks of living in rural Alberta.
I recently moved to Vancouver, now i'm paying $2680 a year! If I lived and worked downtown, i'd seriously consider going carless.
