steering question

I just got a Fit yesterday, very cute but I already have a little issue with it (that I didn't notice during test drive because, well, I was careless).

It's not horrible but the steering assist gives way too much torque and on the highway the car is way too sensitive for my taste. I like having more inertia on my steering wheel. It's a little of a safety concern too.

Is there a way to tune the program on the controller at the dealership or something?? I know the motor is computer controlled.

Also not super excited with the MT gear ratio but I can live with that.

Thanks

Ensure your tires aren't over-inflated.

You are probably just not used to the feel of a light car with skinny tires. The power steering is done with a small electric motor that pretty much shuts off at low speeds. The light steering at highway speeds is due to the very light rolling resistance. You'd be shocked how much the steering is "tightened" up with wider tires.

As for the gear ratios, I'm not a fan either. First is too short, second is too big of a drop in rpm from first, and the overdrive should be more agressive for lower rpm's at Interstate speeds.

I'm going to have to agree with this a lot, I ditched the 175s on the base for 185s with a more performance (but far from performing lol) oriented tire and the car felt way more stable on the highway.

Driving with one hand came with some seat time in the car, but I got used to it. When I go drive other cars I miss the response of the Fit's steering.

I agree that 1st is too short, all the other gears are fine for me. Good enough for 38-39mpg even at 3500 rpm cruising on the highway at 65, so i'm happy.

If I could just get my wife and Mom to slow down to those speeds Mom has an auto Fit so it's not quite as bad, but she can't seem to get the idea that 80mph isn't necessary when driving to work.

Haha! I understand, I had to make a decision to actively change my driving habits and SLOW DOWN, living in Los Angeles for 8 years or so had me used to driving 75 or risk getting run over. Now that i've moved to San Francisco, it seems the freeways here are much more mpg friendly, EVERYBODY drives 65 or below.

It's very relaxing lol

Trying to get OTHER people to change their driving habit to your request is next to impossible i've realized.

You have to get used to the sensitive feel. When I first got mine, I couldn't believe how much I was moving the wheel... a habit from earlier cars. Now, after using both my Fits for quite a while, I wouldn't trade this sensitive responsiveness for anything... and I still am using the stock Dunlop tires.
