We are shopping around for auto insurance and I'm hoping I can get opinions from everybody here about which ones to avoid and which ones you have had a good experience with.

State Farm has been the best for me. I usually go shopping every six months and no other insurance company has been able to beat State Farm for me. I have been with the company at least 20 yrs with multi car discount and homeowners insurance.

Where are you located? I have Wawanesa here in CA and they seem to be decent and pretty inexpensive.

I have State Farm, and have since I started driving. No one has been able to touch their rates, especially since I have multi-car, multi-policy (home) and good driver discounts with them. I pay $299.52 every six months for my Fit Sport Auto.

$327.75 / 6 months through American Family Insurance. Home, multi-car, life insurance discounts apply. I was able to shave $200 off my other car's insurance when I got the Fit by changing the coverage to "pleasure car - low miles" so if you have 2 cars inquire about that FYI.

It's still kinda high, but considering this is my first car and I haven't needed insurance in ages, it's not so bad. That and living in a zip code of Chicago that also includes a not-so-great neighborhood drives the cost up I'm sure.

i guess if i lived in brooklyn, i would just have to walk.
has anyone ever tried AAA?
my only suggestion on the insurance is that places like geico and progressive may be able to give a good rate, but they do not offer home or rent insurance, which traditional companies such as state farm offer discounts for. so if you plan on buying or renting anytime soon, it might be a good idea to avoid those companies.
this is off topic and i am sorry, but i saw someone mention life insurance. everyone should get life insurance. if you have it through the same company that you have your car insurance through, please do yourself a favor and look over every detail of your policy. is your insurance a TERM or a WHOLE life policy? usually everything but term policy's are scams. some policies are promoted as investment/insurance. what usually happens with those is that you pay a flat fee each month, part of it goes to insurance, part to the investment. your rate increases after a while and you never know it because you payment is the same. your higher rate actually starts getting paid with your "investement" policy. eventually your investment runs dry and all of a sudden you either pay a high rate, or your policy lapses. your policy will clearly tell you all of this, but the agent may not. once again i am sorry for the off topic ramble but i felt that this is important knowledge for everyone.
