need opinion: on synthetic oil
hey all:
i'ved had my fit for about 2 weeks now with still 250kms on it. been out of town so its been parked the last week.
anyways i need some opinions out there.
im wanting to switch to synthetic fluid for my first oil change at 5000kms.
just wondering if its a good idea to switch right away or break in the motor first or if its a good thing or bad thing.
advantages or disadvantages. please i need opinions and input from you fellow freaks.
thanks for any replys

Honda factory fill motor oil is loaded with what is called "moly" (molybedinium or something like that). Its good stuff for breaking in, etc. Go to www.bobistheoilguy.com and search for "honda factory fill oil" or similiar terms to research it. Supposedly thats one reason the owners manual says to not change until the OLM hits 10% or so.

From what I've read over the years, break it in with 'natural' oils. Once it's broken in---give it a couple of oil changes---then switch to synthetic. The problem with breaking an engine in with synthetic is that it doesn't have enough resistance to the force of the valves closing against the valve seats, and the valves/valve seats can be damaged.
Now, this may not be an issue today. From what I understand, is that Porsches and other high-end cars come filled with synthetic oil from the factory. Either those engines come pre-broken in, or the oil engineers have figured out how to make synthetic oil work during the break-in period.
But, it's cheap enough to run with 'natural' oil for the first several thousand miles, then switch.

A budy of mine builds rodex motors for sprint cars. He says the very same thing as above. He has a story about a car he built the motor . The oil pump failed. He broke down the engine knowing it would be a loss ($30000 motor new) but it was just fine. He can only atribute it to the synthetic oil the owner had run in that new motor. For the sake of no argument I purposly did not mention the brand oil they used. thats my story.
I deliberate the same question about oil use. You know there is alot of value in just doing conventional oil changes on time. I make it a goal to never let the oil brown the inside of my oil fill cap. when I buy a used car and folks swear they do oil changes every whatever miles and the oil cap is black and they have no good records I know the answer.

When I picked up my FIT I talked to the service people about that. I was told that the oil that comes with it is a synthetic blend and that for the first couple of changes the same oil should be used. After that a full synth is ok, just use the recommended viscosity.
