Decipher the VIN

Does anybody know how to extract the meaning of the Vehical Identification Number (VIN)?

or can you point me to a website where it is explained.

Thanks

Thanks choro for the great sites. I was able to take most of the VIN apart. Good info. I was not able to decipher the meaning of positions 4 thru 8 which is the Manufacturer specific info pertaining to model and other specs of the car. Does anyone have this info?

Thanks again!

BD

PS the wikipedia site had the best explaination

digitd 4-8 for Honda tell you what model the vehicle is.

Example the 03 TL from Acura were:

566-Regular
567-Reg w/nav
568-Type S
569- S w/nav

for the fit you have the base 5speed or AT sport 5sp or Auto.

For the 2007 USA Honda Fit, you're looking at a VIN that goes something like this:
JHMGD386... Sport w/Auto Trans
JHMGD376... Sport w/Manual Trans
JHMGD384... Base w/Auto Trans
JHMGD374... Base w/Manual Trans

...followed by a single-position check digit, then "7S", then a six digit sequence number.

Thanks for the info, just what I was looking for. The last 6 digits are the serial number. Do you know if any of those numbers will tell the color?

Nope. They cycle the colors in batches, so it would be pretty impossible to try to determine the color of any particular VIN, based upon the known colors of other cars within the same serial number range.

OK, thanks for the info. Dewalt, the info on the model type is great. When mine comes in I can determine if it is the correct one by the VIN. Thanks a bunch!

I'm pretty sure the color is in there somehow. When I got the VIN for my Fit before I got the actual car I put the VIN in my ahm-ownerlink.com Honda page (it's for maintenance reminders and coupons and stuff) and it knew which color it was.

The color code is seperate from the VIN but AHM knows which colors are which VINs based on the vin range.

If you add it as one of your vehicles here www.ahm-ownerlink.com it will know what color it is. Other than that maybe there's no way.
