I used some of that industrial strength double-sided sticky tape, I taped that plastic disc that came w/my garmin down there. the suction cup mounts to the disc

yeah it holds pretty well, i think the heat in FL gets to the tape sometimes and it falls down a couple times a year. But I use the Grey colored double-sided tape, which has almost a gummy consistency, it's nice because it comes off easy w/o leaving anything or residue behind. But I sometimes wonder if the white double-sided tape would hold it better? of course the white tape will never come off clean, it leaves tape remnants behind.
just alcohol the surface and press it tight for a couple mins and it should hold a good long time.

As you can see, I put mine where the fuel gauge is.
Prior to that, I had it on the windshield, just under the mirror (like I saw in a few other cars). Actually, I would prefer it roughly where the radio is.
If your suction actually is unusable (damaged), then you could probably find one at Target. Before I got my GPS, I was borrowing someone else's Garmin and I think it didn't like the Armor-all (sp?) wipe that I was using on the surface it attached to. The rubber disintegrated along the edge and became useless. Since it wasn't mine, I went to find a replacement.
If you want to try the friction base, get a flexible one and I think the area between the instrument panel and the vents should be good. It's an overall depression for base, but I'm not sure if its wide enough. I managed to knock one over when I borrowed my sister's Highlander and her GPS a few years back, so I'm a bit reluctant about using them again.

If you can separate the backlight from the LCD, all you have to do is mount it to a brighter light source then bounce off a mirror to magnify it without taking up too much horizontal space.
Basically, its just like those transparency projectors in school.
Not 3D, but with the right contrast and choice of colors, it should look like those hi-tech HUDS and be a little less distracting than a fully 3D "hologram."

Wanna DIY it?

That's actually interesting, but I was thinking more of an advanced adaptive camera system that recognizes the roads/location in front of you and using a projection, draws a guiding outline of the path onto the whole windshield and not just a small corner area. Am I making much sense? Maybe I play too much video games.

Thanks Leaf- I am going with your idea for mounting. I like Krimson Cardinal's vent window mount, but can't reach the touch screen & my GPS doesn't have voice recognition. I have an AT, but the GPS fits fine.

I have A garmin Nuvi 1490T in the passenger side top glove box angled towards the driver. It's hard wired and fused from existing 12v power outlet.I just open and close the lid. Out of sight out of mind. I'll post pics when I get a chance.

just wondering - how hard is it to take the mount on and off the vents? I've been wanting to get something like this for my htc g2 but was afraid it'd be difficult to remove the mount quickly. also, where did you get this, and for how much? Thanks!

Here is my setup: I have the JVC KW-NT3HDT In Dash Nav.
(Under it are an UltraGauge and TWP ETC - I have the wires running through the panel above the accessory power socket in a small hole i drilled)

I don't have a pic of just the mount but its just secured to the radio bezel with 1 square of 3M permanent double stick mounting squares. Very sturdy and it isnt going anywhere
