Unhappy Tires rub when anyone is in our back seat...grrr

Hi ya;ll...we got all our original tires and wheels stolen from our Honda Fit 3 weeks into owning her. We woke up and she was sitting on 4 cynderblocks. We had our insurance company file a claim and we replaced our tires and wheels. Ever since, when anyone is in our back seat and we hit a bump in the road it rubs our tires in the back and makes a noise. The tire shop says they put on the correct size tires, 195/55R15, and claim they don't know what is going on. Any advice on how to fix this? We hate that we can't take anyone along with us, its rediculous. Thanks in advance for any help, Heidi

that is the correct spec for the factory tire. are you sure it didn't happen before getting replacement wheels and tires?

anywho, if it is such a big deal for you, a fellow member took the liberty of letting us know he found air shocks that will work with our vehicles. It may or not be a fix you were looking for. just trying to help

Thanks so much for the response. I do not recall it happening prior to but hey, I could be mistaken...I will check into the shocks, that may be a good idea!

I think I'd reopen the claim with the insurance company, tell them something is rubbing that wasn't before, and have a Honda dealer check it out. Maybe something was damaged in the process. There should be "bumpstops" made out of rubber on the suspension that hit (bottom-out) before the tires rub.

How many miles does it have on it?

I would definitely let the insurance know that you are having issues that you were not having before the theft of your wheels. There might have been some damage to the suspension in the back end when they were jacking it up on blocks. Let us know what you find out.

If you're on stock wheels and tire size then it should never rub.
Something might have been damage when your wheels were stolen.

according to this tread, the bump stops come with the rear shocks (I'm not sure if they're integrated). They may have damaged the shocks and/or bumpstops. Sounds likely.

Hmmm I didn't even think of them damaging it when they stole them, omg...I am going to check this out. I have 40,000 miles on her now, she has been such an awesome car except for that rubbing. Thanks ya;ll.

Yeah, shocks should be good for 100K miles or more. If they need replacing at 40K they were damaged. Bumpstops the same.

Unless someone has modified (lowered) the suspension on your Fit, tires should never rub. Something's not right. Maybe they bent the rear axle.

Edit: if the tire dealer sold you wheels, they might be the wrong offset (distance in or out) that could be the cause.

Call your insurance company and tell them there is additional damage and you need the car to be inspected again at a body shop. Tell them that additional damage was done to the rear suspension as you are having the problem now that you never had before.

they would have had to take out the rear shocks to remove the bump stops, so I HIGHLY doubt that is the issue. also, bending a straight axle by sitting on cinder blocks is a little far fetched.

I put on Monroe Air Shocks $57 + free ship from Amazon + hour or so of some pretty easy work. You can handle about anything after that. No tire rubbing, no bottoming and smoother ride over a wider range of loads.

Agreed.

OP, What wheels did they replace your OE ones with?

Yes yes, you guys are on the right track,

Did you get stock sport wheels (I think my 07, had '55' cast on to the rim face out) Aftermarket may have that or a sticker maybe on the rim behind the face. Or post up a pic, folks are very sharp here and know wheels just by looking at them.

55 offset is stock and you probably would be fine down to 45 or so aftermarket. I would put bumpstops and shocks further down the list as more unlikely at this moment.

So if it is aftermarket wheels the shop needs to make it right (get you more around 45-55 offset) -or- if you like the wheels consider making them throw in air shocks.

I was assuming from the wording that the OP replaced them with OEM rims but you know what happens when you assume lol

My Aunt test drove a Fit a few years ago. We noticed on the test drive that the rear wheels were rubbing with the car fully loaded with adults.

If you have an 08 195/55x15 is correct size (185/55x16 for 09)but did you put the correct wheels / The stock offset is 55 mm and if you replaced with wheels of 42 mm offset or less rubbing is guaranteed.
Stay 45 to 55 mm to avoid rubbing.
Rubbing with heavy rear seat load is pretty common and you can address the problem by substituting AirLift shocks in the rear - see the last years posts on doing that. They are quite easy to do and a number of posters took good photos.

Hmm that is weird. Did it have the stock rims?? I've had 4 200 plus pound men in my car and my wheels never rubbed.

That is surprising... Typically the bump stops should be the only thing you're riding on with a stock suspension/wheel/tire setup when you're overloaded.

Was the Fit used? I've seen used cars on the lot with incorrectly sized tires on them (i.e. the height:width ratio was off on the high side).
