Trans. noise

I don't mean to sound patronizing but do you come to a complete stop before changing from reverse to drive? I've experienced this a lot in such a case where I'm in a hurry and I simply don't completely stop before switching.

I knew someone would ask me that . Yes, I do come to a complete stop. It's just that the A/T is loud when engaging into 1st gear and I am not sure if this is due to it being such a compact car? My previous ride was a GMC jimmy so gear noise was low due to a thick A/T casing and underbody. I can always test drive another fit when I go to get my first oil change(2500miles and still @ 80% oil life).

It's a bit clunky going from reverse to drive (09 base auto at 2k miles) but silky smooth shifting through forward gears (compared to its predecessor, 97 Odyssey 4cyl 4spd auto). Nothing out of the ordinary for a small Japanese car. The 12 year old Odyssey would clunk between forward gears when the engine wasn't pulling much even when new. Service dept said yeah, all Hondas do that. It was still going strong at 225K when I sold it.
Honda did have terrible problems with the 2nd gen Odyssey 6cyl auto. Too much power, weight and heat and the tranny couldn't take it in the first few years it was out.
I think they have small light cars sussed though, and the Fit has been out for what, 8years?

Thanks! The crazy thing is that it almost sounds like the automatic door lock feature except I had that turned off at the dealership. 225k and going strong on your odyssey is killer! I dated a girl who's parents bought one with the auto slidding door when they first came out. Every time they used it at wal-mart etc. and someone saw it the people would ask them to do it again and again it was sooooo funny!

I think I'm hearing your noise in mine now (cooler days, windows down).
It's a mechanical noise similar to door locks when I shift from reverse to drive, just as you described.
I don't think it's anything to do with the transmission, I'd guess it's automatic (drum) brake adjustment. Just a guess, but it sounds healthy.

Yeah we all hear that to a certain degree from day 1. If you are not at a complete stop, it will be louder. Even if you come to a complete stop, you should hear that energize when you first start to go forward (very slight sound). It is normal.
