Question OMG - deplorable mileage

I'm new to the forum as we just bought an '07 Fit Sport 5spdm with 56K on it. We bought the car 175mi away from home and got back into town with a little more than half a tank left. The rest of the tank was around town with a final 30mpg, satisfactory.
So we fill it up and run a full tank down just in-city miles. Boy was I shocked to see 202.7 on the trip meter and 8.65 gallon added, for a deplorable 23.4!!
My wife drives the car the most, but we are both fairly "spirited" drivers especially with a new toy in our hands. We typically shift in the 4k range for first and second, but doesn't everybody?
Anyway the car is awesome, but I was expecting to spank-it and still get high 20's.
So what is a couple of heavy foots to do?

Another update. I drove from Dallas to Houston, and I only got ~30 mpg. I'm guessing it's not my driving. Tire pressures were around 33 psi before I left. I'll try more air on my next calculation.

Worst I've seen is 29.6 MPG, but that was around 2200 miles on the car, and I finally played with it, letting it run up to around 5500 RPM. I can't resist.....

I have just over 10k on my 09. My worst is 31.5 MPG. The worst have been in last 3 tanks, which is the first time I have seen it below 33. All 3 times I filled up with Costco gas. My next 3 tanks will come from Shell to see if there is a difference. Next year my commute will change, I will actually have a commute instead of a 10 minute drive. Looking forward to seeing how the mileage changes with my longer commute. By the way, my best was 40mpg and I average 35. Yes, I manually calculate, I do not trust the computer to tell me my mileage! Most of my driving is in town. I drive like a grandpa, I'm usually in second 2nd by 10mph and keep shifting every 10mph. Normal for me to cruise in town @ 41 in 5th gear. I wish I had a 6th gear for the highway. Oil changes at 5k with maintenance minder at 60%

You don't want to do this: it'll mess up the evaporative recovery system.
I might be mis-understanding what you are posting, but as far as I know, you cannot mess up a calculation.
Record ODO at each stop. Record gas pumped at each stop. Subtract current ODO from last ODO and divide by current gallons pumped.

Whether you fill to the top, or anywhere below, doesn't make a difference. Only difference would be if the gas station mis-represented what they sold you, and the chances of that are incredibly low IMHO...

Or am I off base?

*on topic:

On my second tank. First tank was 29.98xxxx. Not bad for cold Rochester NY and my tendency towards accelerating faster than I need to. Hope to see it improve.

29 mpg. Last week, a 500-mile trip in horrendous weather against a strong headwind. Defroster (A/C) on the entire trip. I would have gotten the same mileage in our Acura TL. Mileage in the Fit is very much affected by high wind.

Better weather ahead. Cheers.

Got the exact same thing when I was driving slowly in snow. Oh well, can't really complain. I probably would've averaged around 10 mpg in my old truck with the 4X4 on...

My worst was 31.2 in all city driving early last April. Lots of short trips, cold weather, and the car was still brand new and not broken in (it was only my third tank of gas).

I got only 31.4 on my last tank. That's by far the lowest I've gotten since the car has been broken in. Winter temps and snow are "wrecking" my mileage--check out the month-by-month bar graphs of my mileage from summer to winter:

The Fit M/T (Honda Fit) | Fuelly

OTOH, 31.4 is about what the lifetime average was on my old Focus zx3.

The worst tank I've ever gotten was during December 2007 (less than 1k miles on the clock that whole month); I averaged just a hair over 24 MPG on a tank. After that every tank has been 28 MPG and up.

I think I figured out why I couldn't get good mileage - 2 reasons. Summer gas formula and running the AC all the time. Now that we are in the winter gas formula I am getting MUCH better mileage, around 30 mpg even in the city. Now THAT'S more like it, and I don't drive like your grandma, either. In fact hubby can't drive with me, he gets carsick! ha ha, keeps him out of my car!

^ LOL, nice!

My last fill up was after 253.3 miles were driven; it took 9.514 gallons to refill giving me 26.624 MPG.

I don't have the exact numbers, but it was around 27 MPG. Main reason was because I did some WOT pulls trying to lose a Mustang that was tailgating me.

not exactly sure.. but my car has never gotten great mpg.. maybe its the high altitude (4500-4800 feet) or the freezing weather on a daily basis, or the fact that all my driving is city... idk
