Regular oil the first time.
Then at 6k Synthetic oil.
I cant wait until 5K Im sorry, i dont car what any one says.
Its hard enough for me to wait until 3K let alone 5K. I know technology is better now but still . Little pieces of metal do break off

I'll watch the % life indicator, but will definitely change it at 8000kms (5000miles) whatever it says. I gather there is a break in oil in the engine at first...I don't know whether it hurts to leave it longer, but doubt it. Changing oil more often is a sure fire way to prolong engine life, and, as long as the waste oil is recycled into new oil, isn't an environmental issue. I'm going to go at least every 8000 kms (5000 miles), regardless of what the indicator says. It's been common practise to change either on mileage, or time . I don't know how reliable this oil quality sensor is, but as I kept my last new car 14 years, I'll not take a chance.

The service manager at my dealer is married to a Honda Canada employee...who says to NOT change the first, break in oil early. I'm Old School, but willing to change my habits !

Yeah, I think the maintenance minder is going to give the service dept (and do it yourselfers) "fits". I'll be glad not have to have one of those reminders on my windshield. Sometimes they fall off, and then when do you change the oil?

What is the break-in period of my Honda?

What is the break-in period of my Honda?

Help assure your vehicle's future reliability and performance by paying extra attention to how you drive during the first 600 miles (1,000 kilometers). During this period:
Avoid full-throttle starts and rapid acceleration. Avoid hard braking. New brakes need to be broken in by moderate use for the first 200 miles (300 km).

Why should I wait to change the oil the first time

Why should I wait to change the oil the first time

Your Honda engine was delivered with an oil that is specially formulated for new engines that have not yet developed their "natural" wear patterns and may contain minute particles from the manufacturing process.

American Honda strongly recommends this special oil be left in the engine long enough for these wear patterns to develop, usually until the first maintenance interval specified in your Owner's Manual, based on your specific driving conditions.
