Oil Changes??

Hey,
Whenwould you recomend to change the oil.
The honda dealer told me 5K. I Think this is way to high.
He said they have "sealers and additives that need to stay inside".
I was going to do a oil change at 1K, Now maybe Ill wait until 3K.
Plus I will use mobil 1 synthetic.
What is Aimsoil. Is it worth the price??
Finally, can i do my own oil changes?, or does it void the warrenty??

Wait on the first oil change. Dealer, for once, is correct about the initial oil.

You can change your own oil and filter, it will not void the warranty. You would be advised to keep your receipts for oil and filter purchases to show that you actually purchased these, and when.

Finally, anyone who is going to be performing any type of maintenace on their own vehicle is advised to keep a log of it.

Personally, I keep two logs (actually just index card size spiral books,) one for gas - date, mileage, trip miles, gallons; and the second for maintenance - date, mileage, work done.

I record oil/filter changes, including brand and grade, tire rotations, valve adjustments, timing adjustment, replacements of fuses, light bulbs, installation of any accessories, etc.

By having this information, I've never had a dealer say a word to me about anything on mine. Of course, the service and parts folks know me by name when I walk in!!

I'm diggin' the Sport version (I don't know that the others have it) that has the maintenance monitor on the dash...tells you what the oil life is. So you don't change it too soon. That's just sweet.

I have a Sport Too, But I dont plan on waiting until the idiot light tells me to change the oil. I am leary of this. Dont get me wrong, I do think it is cool.
But to wait until 5K to change theoil, I think that is a mistake.

5k miles is fine. It's the oil manufacturers that have people still believing in 3k intervals. The auto manufacturers do plenty of oil testing, and their intervals are appropriate. If you want to use synthetic (Mobil1 or Castrol Syntec), you should wait until about 10k miles to start using it. And I would recommend these brands over Amsoil.

castrol is pretty crappy oil, outside of generic brand and pennizol, castrol is among the worst.

mobile1 is a bit on the thin side for their rating, but very good oil.

First oil change at 5,000 miles. I'm not sure of the Fit, but in most Hondas, there are special additives used in the factory to help with engine break-in and help the seals.

Mobil 1 is probably the best oil to use but I wouldn't switch to synthetic until 10K miles.

You can certainly do your own oil changes and maintenance but just keep a concise maintenance logbook for what is done and when (date and current mileage).

The oil that came in the car must be kept for the specified amount of time. It helps the motor break in properly.

The oil life monitor is there for a reason. If you think changing the oil before then will be better down the road, go for it. Only thing you'll do is spend more money. New cars don't dirty the oil as quickly as older cars did, and the newer oils last longer.

I don't know where you got that "statistic," but I work for BMW and we use Castrol exclusively in our cars. BMW have done independent testing among almost all brands worldwide (much to the chagrin of certain oil manufacturers) and found Castrol to be among the very best (if not THE best... I forget the exact order). However, most people prefer the brand name of Mobil1, hence its spot at the top of most consumer's choices. Not to say that it isn't an excellent oil as well.

That's what my dealer told me, and I'm going to go with that. There's another thread on this forum about breaking-in where some kids are saying to rev the engine hard and change the oil after 1k. Eeek? I'm glad your dealer told you 5k too.

I like this idea, for keeping track of MPG. Cool.

but let's face it, bmw is far from reliable.

im daily driving a 400hp sti pushing more then 20psi of boost, i put my car through more stress then most people ever will.

granted i burn some oil regardless of brand, castrol is among the worst. mobile 1, i burn maybe half a quart every 3000 miles. castrol synethic (i get them for free from work), i burn a quart in less a 1500 miles.

1. BMWs have lots of electronic problems, including engine-electronics. Mechanically the engines are considered by the industry to be "bulletproof."

2. Your car's various burn-rates of different brands of oil have nothing to do with the oil's quality. Pay for an oil examination after using each oil for a given amount of time and then compare the amounts and types of metal in each sample. The results would be the proof of a given oil's quality.

These are not my opinions, these are facts that I base on my career with an industry-leading auto manufacturer. But I'm not going to expand any further because we are losing the original point of the thread.
