What do you do at Travis AFB? I spent 99-03 there. Lots of fun. I worked on the c-5's and kc-10's.

Now I've tasted the "finer" things in life (Japan for 4 years) and now, this little po-dunk city is too boring for me. I don't gamble and I rarely drink, and that's pretty much all there is to do here. I'll just take it one day at a time.

Glad that you made it safely!!! What are you doing in military if you don't drink and gable?!?!?!? Just kidding!! The only thing that you are going to have to do in awhile is enjoy the skeeters. Oh yeah, and fish!!!

I drive a MT and I noticed that when I'm on the freeway, I'm usually at 2900-3100 RPM cruising at 65-70 mph, I've never really paid much attention to MPGs that much. How is the MPG on the Fit when you are constantly cruising at those speeds?

I need some words of advice from people who has ever driven cross country, what should I bring with me to make this drive as painless as possible?

Thanks guys.

Drove from Daytona Beach, FL to San Diego, Los Angeles & San Francisco & back.

If you are smart and fill up regularly, and try to never go below 1/2-1/4 of a tank, you won't need the extra gas can.
We left Florida at 5pm Eastern time on a Friday and Arrived at my cousin's place in Los Angeles at 6pm local time Sunday Evening. We hauled a$$

My guess is if you are coming to Biloxi, you're bound to find yourself in driving through part of Texas I'd think. That was where we would top off the tank anytime we could. Because there may be multiple hundred mile stretches without fuel stations close by. (If someone has already mentioned something like this, I apologize as it's late and I didn't want to read through 3 pages before posting, and was just excited to share my tips from my 1st X-country drive)
We kept a trash bag close by, ate on the run, and slept in the car with refresh mode. Not sure how much you'll be packing but if you can, it's good to have that seat position readily available for those cat naps en route.
Best tank during the trip was 44 mpgs. Lots of coasting pulse & glide, that sort of thing, and watching speed. But that was for only one tank. I'd say the average trip was mid 30s. I know we spent just shy of $250 at the time for fuel there and back. This was during December/January, fuel was at its lowest in some parts of the country, and we took advantage of that. Now I'd say it'd be more between a $300 & $400 trip.

Best of luck and safe travels. To be truly a X-country trip IMHO, you should leave one coast and go until you see the next :-) but Biloxi is on the Gulf, which could be atlantic waters so it isn't too far I suppose...

(FYI just mapquested Bay area to Biloxi and it looks like you'll be on a very similar itinerary if you follow that to what I did - and that means A LOT of Texas! Took us an entire day to cross east to west!)

Well. my last trip from CA to NC took 2.5 days. My only cross country trip in my Fit netted 36 mpg and roughly 280 to 300 miles between fillups. Any longer than that any more is uncomfortable. Gas stations are plentiful so I don't know why you'd carry spare gas. Once you clear Denver its boring as it can get so those 280 mi fillups are needed to stave off flling asleep at the wheel provide you don't overeat. have a good trip.

Just saw this thread, good luck on your trip.

I have to agree with those who say no to the extra gas in the car. The risk of something happening in your car with that gas is far, far greater than the risk of running out of gas.

Rather than a spare can I would suggest one or both of the following:
  • A cellphone and AAA or other auto club membership. They'll bring the gas to you in the unlikely event that you run out.
  • "Hyperfill" your Fit's gas tank. The weird tank location and long filler neck on these cars makes for a lot of extra room for fuel. I routinely get 400+ miles on a tankful by squeezing in an extra 2+ gallons after the pump kicks off for the first time. It takes a little patience and time to get the gas in there but it's worth it if you want to go as far as you can between fillups. Hypermilers have done this for quite a long time with no reports of harm being done to the car.
Again, good luck on your trip. Stick close to the speed limit signs (a little above of course ) and be sure to give construction guys a break and slow down through construction zones; cops have ZERO sense of humor about speeding there! Let us know how it goes.

I've already arrived at my destination. everyone was right, no need for the extra gas. i did the hyperfill thing and averaged about an extra gallon to 1.5 gallons. i never went above 375 miles per fill up and barely even got close to a 1/4 of a tank. i P'n'G'd for most of west texas because it was so boring, i had to do something other than listen to music. overall, the trip went well, i just wished someone else could've rode along for the trip. i was calling people just so i can have a conversation (bluetooth of course). i gotta do it again in november, this time, just heading the other way.

Glad to hear it! On the way back, check out books on tape (or whatever recording media floats your boat). I drove coast to coast a few years ago solo, and with some books on tape (CD in my case) the miles melted away.

For what it's worth I was in a big hurry to get back east and did it in 58 hours, including a blizzard in Utah that forced me off the highway overnight. Not that I'm comparing myself to the Cannoballers or anything like that....

I dont even have my fit yet. But was planning to go from Long Beach, CA, past Oregon, up to Washington when I got it. Mine will be a 4 day trip, each way as well.

Some of the people I've asked who said they have gone long distances claimed they were fine. Just be careful on any bumps or holes as fits look pretty close to the ground.

(oops sorry I just read your other post)

I just took a trip from Tampa, FL through Pittsburgh, PA to Hamilton, ON Canada and back. Total miles roundtrip was 2700. I haven't done my fuel average yet and I am not sure I will but with the padding my dash computer typically gives, I would say I got about 37-38 mpg. (I drove a little fast most of the time.) I spent $132 on gas and still had 3/4 of a tank when done. It was about 21-22 hours one way.

I have to say how impressed I was with the car on a long trip. I was comfortable the whole way. I didn't feel my back hurting from sitting so long. However I did still want to get out and stretch. I brought a power inverter for my MP3 player because I knew it would never last and it didn't. But the music never stopped. My trip was a marathon type of trip. I left Thursday night and got back home on Monday afternoon. I tried catch some sleep in the back on an air matress but that didn't go so well. The mattress was too big for the space and I had to fold it up to get it to fit inflated and hatch closed. With the stuff I had in the car, it made it difficult to make room for me to sleep. I think next time I will either ensure I don't have such large stuff or just sleep in the reclined front seat.

That's more than twenty miles per dollar.

We are planning a trip to Boston and New England. We bought the Fit for cheap, long-distance travel. We won't sleep in it, though, except for catnaps at rest areas on long hauls (like Salt Lake to St. Louis).

I really enjoy reading about these trips--can't wait to head out.

Cheers.

Perhaps if you put it in the car uninflated and then pumped it up? I've actually managed to catch a few winks in the front seat before, but it didn't last. My wife kept screaming about watching the road and...

The irony there was that I inflated it first so I could save space and not take the pump since it was a large hand pump. The fact that it was inflated didn't really make a difference. The Fit just isn't large enough for a person to lay flat. I'm not tall, only 5' 10", and I had to find a place to put my legs. Honestly, I think my fatigue at the time was affecting my ability to move stuff around and make space. I was so tired after that marathon drive that I had the shakes. I'm not going to do that crap again.

When you get tired, you have to stop and sleep for a while. There is just no substitute for a nap, and I've tried them all. Set the alarm in your phone to wake you after a couple of hours, recline the seat, and you'll feel much better when you wake up.

If I'm alone, I like Pzizz on the iPod ( pzizz ). Just don't accidentally play that track while you're driving.

Well, that is what I was doing. Problem was that I was taking 2-4 hour naps in between 22 hour drives. It just wasn't enough but I didn't have a choice because I was on a timeline.

I think we will be passing each other in April... I'm heading to IL from SF taking the southern Las Vegas route. (it's faster since it's a lower grade climb)

That should be a great trip. How about posting a few pictures for the rest of us? I think the Fit is a great cross-country car. I drove 22,000 miles in ours the first year--all cross-country. Four hundred miles this week so far. Unfortunately, all in Illinois and still waiting for springtime.

Anybody else going anywhere interesting?

Cheers.
