5-Speed manual does 3500rpm at 80mph...what does the automatic do?
Subject says it all...
I commute in New Mexico at 75-85 mph. I saw a reference somewhere that said the Fit 5-speed manual is reving at 3500 rpm at 80 mph...that is really high for my tastes.
Anyone know what RPM's the Fit does at 80 mph with the 5-speed automatic?
Thanks...

I had an old Audi that did 3k in 5th at 80, wasn't that much of a concern. I can't imagine 3.5k at 80 will be that much louder. However, I would have thought that they would've made 5th taller.
I'll be in Richmond, VA, after I get this car, will be commuting at much the same speeds you will. I'll reserve judgment until I can get a test drive...here's hoping my local dealer will have one when they start to hit dealers...

3500 RPM sounds about right. My Civic Si with the same size engine as the Fit would run around 75-80 MPH at about that RPM. This little motor thrives at that RPM - you're not even close to hurting it. MPG might go down a bit. I'd also think the auto trans would be better MPG at that speed because the gear ratio is a bit taller - I think it's like 1 MPG different.
When I was in the Air Force, I was stationed in Roswell, New Mexico (yes, THAT Roswell), and we used to go up to Albuquerque for the weekend. You used to be able to drive pretty fast on the hiway. One night, we left Albuquerque around midnight and got back to the base in Roswell in 2 hours and 15 minutes, and it's 204 miles from Albuq to Roswell.

Thanks for all the replies guys.
I've always been one to favor a more relaxed high-speed cruise RPM...I know the engine won't suffer at 3500 rpm, but for noise level and MPG's, I'd rather be down around 2500 or less.
But maybe I'm forgetting just how sweet a Honda/Acura engine is...maybe the noise level won't be intrusive.
Still, I'd like to know what the automatic does at 80 mph.

Actually I think it is closer to 3,800 at 80 mph. Can anybody that has one confirm? This is pretty high, but it does not hurt the engine. I have an Integra that actually revs a tad higher and it has 205,000 miles on it.
I have had it over 4,000 rpm for hours at a time.
The noise is anoying though - what I like least about the Integra, and the gas mileage does suffer. 6 speed would be the best of both worlds. Unfortunately Honda (and most others) tend to make the gear ratios even closer when they put in a 6 speed, and don't use the extra gear for relaxed cruising.
BTW to find out what the auto does at 80 plug the numbers into the formula I posted in the other rpm thread. I would do it, but I gotta run.

Tell me if I am right here:
5th auto = .550
5th manual = .757
So..
.550/.757 = 72.6%
If I know that the manual does 3500 rpm at 80 mph, that would mean the automatic would do 72.6% of that, or just 2541 rpm.
What I don't know is how the final drive ratio figures into this, if at all.
I'd be thrilled if the auto did 2500 rpm at 80 mph.

I plugged the numbers in and the Fit is doing 2203 rpm @ 60 mph with the automatic. That would be 2937 @ 80. Seems to jive with the numbers above.
This translates to 27.23 miles per hour for every 1,000 rpm, so any speed is easy to calculate.
BTW I used the standard tires for my calculations the sport tires are within a percent or so, but not exactly the same.

Well if itis 3,800 that seems a bit high for the redline of the Fit, but at the sametime that is not high at all looking at the over all aspec of where most Hondas rev at 80mph
