1996 Civic HX got better MPG

All true, but the fact remains that the heavier Corolla with a larger more powerfull 1.8 liter engine gets 41 highway. The fit could certainly equel or exceed that if given the proper gears.

Unfortunately too many in the U.S. buy cars by hp and 0-60 so they geared it shorter.

I am holding out to see what people actually get for mpg. Some cars can exceed the EPA by a huge amount. My Integra is one of them. It is EPA 24/28 with the manual, and I can get 40 mpg if I drive carefully and keep it under 65. Even going 80+ I get about 31 or 32.

If the fit gets 40 mpg going 75 I will be happy. I look forward to hearing reports of mileage, but very few people have probably filled up yet.

Plus I'll bet money that the old HX wasn't ULEV - 2 certified...

I noticed that Honda says the Fit MPG figures are based on 2007 EPA tests.
Are these the revamped mileage tests that are suppost to make the MPG rating closer to real life driving? If so than there could be a 10 to 15 percent difference in MPG scores. 38 highway new tests and say maybe 43 highway using the old tests.

By George, you're right! You probably should not buy a Fit, but should instead find yourself a good 1996 Civic!

Well since I have owned a 97 Civic HX since new and averaging 37.68 mpg I have to say I love my car! It is fun to drive for an economy car and isn't that what it is all about? Yes it does make some compromises in power to achieve that kinda fuel mileage but an Explorer Sport Trac a buddy of mine owns only beats the HX by a car length or two when we lined em up.
For me I will not be getting a FIT for the reason that mine does indeed get better mpg but my girlfriend has a deposit on a VBP 5 speed so will have more reviews between the two at a later time.
At the time I wanted a Prelude but the amount of miles I had to drive to work and the fact that the Lude requires premium gas and that I had a big house payment at the time I went for the cheaper choice and thought well I can get what I want when the house is paid for.
So 7 years later it seems that I did find what I really wanted in the 2003 Honda S2000 and I kinda think it was fate there that I now have my economy daily driver and weekend sports car which I probably would not have been able to afford if I had gotten the Prelude .

It sure wasn't. Lean-burn = mileage + NOx.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this gentleman comparing the 1.3L lean burn Jazz with 2 valves and two spark plugs per cylinder to the US 1.5L VTEC? The L15A is a heckuva lot faster, and provides a better starting point for tuners than the 1.3, as it was designed to be. I'm sorry, but it just happens to be a really fun and great all-around car.

my 99 hatch avg 36-39mpg highway when I was not driving hard.

To be honest you will not go wrong with either one just stay away from the awful automatic CVT in the HX . After 7000 miles my girlfriends Fit is getting 34-39 mpg while my HX is averaging 37.6 mpg.
The one thing I have to say is since I get to compare the two a lot is that the Fit has damn impressive handling and turn in that is much sharper than the Civic.
Like I said they are both Hondas and I think both are great at what they do and lets just say the HX was the economy car to have 10 years ago while the Fit is the one to buy if you are looking now!

If you find a 2004 Civic HX (not a hybrid) that cost $15k you can drive a car that has more power and gets 40+ mpg. Regularly. And at 70 mph.
As ours approaches 100K miles the overall statistics are not arguable. And yes we had CRX HX's too. All the same. We have to keep good records for the IRS.

T1R has a taller gear set if this really bothers you so much. I prefer my car just the way it is, I can easily get 40mpg on the highway doing 120kkm (75mph) BTW.

No doubt the Corolla gets some pretty good mileage, I looked at getting an XRS myself until I realized it was using premium fuel.

I'm pretty disappointed in my Fit's MPG so far... and I traded my '02 Civic in for it, which got incredible gas mileage.

My best MPG has been 24 in the city. Unfortunately because of my wife, we had to buy the AT model... but still, 24 MPG... something isn't right!

blame the government. they cant make the billions of dollars in taxes every year if they were to let 50+mpg cars take over...would they?

Why not bump this sorry thread with another sorry post from a FOG who sorely misses his old 03 HX M/T.
I got over my BMW 525 wagon and I'll get over my HX.
My 09 Sport M/T is definitely growing on me. I'm getting 35 in town and 40 hwy. It's definitely quicker than the HX but I have to shift twice to get to 70 and is revving higher (3400 vs. 2800) at 70 in fifth. Ya gotta remember the Fit is 6" taller pushing much more air. Mmm, how would one look chopped?

you got over your 525 just like the rest of us; you get 30+ mpg now instead of 18.
We kept our 04 HX because it gets 40+ mpg at 105k miles and runs away from my 08 Fit both in a straight line and on track. 1700 cc and 2500 lb beats 1500 cc and 2600 lb even without the lower CG.
And yes I still say the Fit should have the HX 1700 cc engineand tranny so it wouldn't so overworked to get 30 -35 mpg.
No matter how easy I drive 40 mpg ain't in the cards in these hills.
And Fit auto needs 1.24 third not 1.067 to help increase mpg with sport shifting.
And Fit needs the 6 speed CVT in automatic
And Fit needs rear discs.
Hate to tell you but a Versa SER and Spec 5 are in the works. When that happens ...

Well put Mahout. It will be interesting to see if Honda comes out with a punchy diesel or ?
I do like the utility of my Fit. I can haul my geriatric parents around very comfortably and still have a fun econobox. Like I said - the Fit is still growing on me.

I thought the title of this thread was "Tell Honda Got something to say to Honda? Good or bad? Say it here." - It seems that its all over the place.

I think that on any car, it all depends how you drive it. To factor what MPG you getting, you have to consider many factors to include in the formula: Ex. Clean Airfilter? Racing to the red light? Iddle Time>2 min? City/Hwy Driving? - We can all get technical here but tha's not what this thread is about.

Now, this is what I got to tell Honda:

Good: Thanks for the good reliable cars thruout the years, as is now the most modded car in history. Thanks for the great gas Miliage, great looking cars, and keeping safety in mind all around including decreasing how bad a person would get injured if ran over.

Bad: Not using technology in place to make vehicles that give us 60+ MPG. I know its a long process and it's not easy to make a vehicle overnight and expect it on the market.

You should take into account that the EPA revised their MPG ratings to be more real life

Unfortunately, they're still wrong.
Use the city mileage as your evaluation of the mpg you will get. That will be much closer than the so-called highway mileage as both are test programs that virtually none of us can do.
They are only means to compare one model with the next.
