First Tank Mileage...VERY SATISFIED
Yea, I know this type of thread has been done to DEATH, but I'm just too stoked not to post.
First tank, hand calc'd 42.9mpg! That's with 32% city and a/c on 1/2 the time.
Why am I stoked with that milage? I've got a a/t sport. After reading some of the posts about DISMAL milage with the a/t I'm more than satisfied.
First day tires went to 51psi (max rating on sidewal), and I was practicing some hypermilling (popping into neutral on long down-hills). Other than that I simply did the speed-limit (65 and 55 mix at 80 miles per day).
I'm thinking upper 40's when she's broken in and I don't need a/c anymore.
Yea!

lol grats bro, that must be a nice feeling! getting what you hoped for when you spend $15000+ is always a good thing.
my first tank I drove eco style until the half tank mark, I had about 230 miles, but after that I think I drove my fit like a madman. I ended up with about 300 miles at 8.5 gallons = 35 mpg. the fit is awesome.
since I put on my exhaust and headers i've been flooring the car around every curve. each fill up I expect worse mileage, but it's actually increasing. I probably went full throttle 20% of this tank and more than half throttle for 30% more of that, and I just filled up at 33.8 mpg. last week was 32.5, craziness. I can't wait for my first roadtrip.

Great numbers man. I'm looking forward to my first oil change when I'll drive in 'sport' mode too!
So far I'm on the same target...Essentially 100 mile/quarter tank. That's with a meal in the car w/ac on while parked. What I really want is to know how good of mileage I can get...Then I'll drive it like a raped ape. Once that novelty wears off I'll drive like a normal guy and settle with my 35ish mpg...Till' then I'm going to work my arse off for 45mpg.
Sweet lookin' ride.

Good job.
NOT trying to hate but lets see if you can maintain that for a few tanks. Don't let Gas pumps lead you down the wrong road. Use that same gas pump or another for several tanks using the same driving techniques to make sure your numbers are real.
I know I had a fluke tank once and I couldn't figure out why unless it was the gas pump.

BEST in class AT fits with NO A/C and minimal city is 43mpg
typical is 35 with decent driving.
Like was said already look at the next 3 fills

Hmmmmm..Not spreading hate eh?
For all the haters...Right now I'm still on the same target as my last tank...100/qtr. Sitting at 203 right at the 1/2 mark...Just like my last tank. Predict 360 at the fuel indicator light, and then....
What? More sour grapes?

I think what is in order here is a careful consideration as to what constitutes minimal 'city' driving. Santa Fe, New Mexico might not be considered 'city' to someone who lives in San Fran or LA. Heck, 'rual' in LA county is considered 'city' in NM, but compared to Bozeman MT, Santa Fe is a major city.
To be more forthcoming my 20% 'city' is where I hit a maximum of 4-6 lights within a 10 mile radius of my destination. Having lived in the Bay Area I would have considered that distance and delay 'clear highway' driving.
All that said, your right...Proofs in the puddin'. More proof soon.

i also call rubbish... my points being:
1.every pump you go to is calibrated differently to shut off at a different pressure...
2.the filler tube holds at least 2 gallons of fuel, you have no idea how full the tank is
the only way you can know for sure what your gas mileage is would be to top it off completely to where you can see the gas in the tube, then drive so many miles then top it off again and calculate. this you should NOT do because it is so bad for so many reasons... but i do it occasionally if i am going to drive it 100 miles immediately. the alternative and much better way is to have a scangauge to plug into the ECU
i was fooled by my car's gas mileage for a few weeks after i got it. i thought i was getting in the high 40s. since then i have determined it to be at best 40, but i average between 35 and 38. which is excellent for me.. i do all highway driving.
don't let your car fool you... or the gas pumps.. haha
oh and i only have 3200 miles on my car

I couldn't help it. For real if you are getting that mpg then your wallet will know. Time will tell all, that is for sure. I hope you can continue to achieve that mpg and better, that is what we are all here for. I speak for myself and POSSIBLY others but it ain't easy getting great mpg, it takes practice and lots of analyzing your route, traffic and habits. You could be the exception to the rule but the odds are against you my friend. IF you are truely sitting at 200+ at midway then it sounds like you are on the right track, keep on keeping on.

Why am I still posting? I have nothing to prove, gain or otherwise benefit from posting on this forum. I was simply stating what my first tank yielded great mileage.
Also, like all of you, I've seen really BAD AT mpg's posted on this forum and felt the AT community, if not existing, but future owners could see that in fact once in a while you can achieve decent numbers.
I'll post back on Thursday or Friday about the full tank results, but so far eyeballing right on 40mpg...Shouldn't have had Taco Bell with my kids in the parking lot for 20 minutes of idling with the a/c on! Lots of gas, but not the right kind.

P.S: O'yea and Fat Ping, there is no way on Gods green earth that the fill tube holds 2 gal's of fuel. If you believe that then I have some beach front property in New Mexico I'll sell you cheap. What you are doing by 'squeezing' 2ish more gals into the tank is taking up the air-gap space that is there, by design, to allow for thermal expansion of the fuel to prevent spill-over. All modern HDPE tanks have this feature...Even my CTD Dodge.
My CTD would shut off at 31-32gals on dead-E, and I could squeeze another 3-4 gals in for a total capacity of 35-36 gals. This took forever! Because diesel doesnt have the same expansion properties of regular gas, I 'fixed' the issue in my Dodge by relocating the tank vent tube from its stock location (on the lower portion of the tank) to the highest portion (tanks are shaped like kidney beans). This allowed for full-rip fill ups right to the base of the filler neck every time.
I'm sure you could do this mod to the Fit as well, and I might just do it some day to get my range a little higher. The only real issue you would have is if you filled up to the brim and then parked in a hot/sunny spot. You would puke fuel for sure.
And if you have any empirical data that shows that "...every pump you go to is calibrated differently to shut off at a different pressure" I'd sure like to see it. I fill up at the same station at the same pump, but I guess here in New Mexico all pumps are long in their calibration of fuel delivery...SNAP! That's why I got the mileage I did! Dang, their giving me free gas!
Seriously we're talking about very small quantities here. I'm calculating based on miles driven divided by gals put into the tank. Even if the pump shut off, calibration or whatever were 1/2 gallon off I'd still be a pig in stink with the mpg. I doubt it's 2 cups off.

My bad FPC, didn't mean to come down so hard. It's just that there is so much mis-information spewed around about what is and isn't, who's telling the truth and who's looking for some sort of econo-box glory, it's easy to get tweaked a little.
It's all good.

haha thanks... i could find other threads about the filler tube, crazy thing is so long. i've had my car a couple of months and all my driving is highway, i live next to a interstate and the army depot i work at is right off the interstate so i usually do 75-85 (speeding up pretty good when passing people) in the morning and 65 going home just cruising. after a week of a daily 80 mile commute i got a true 37.5 MPG with a/c on and off depending on how i felt, so it would be no surprise to me if i drove more for economy to be in the 40s, and i expect it to get better the more broken in it gets since it only has 3400 miles on it. i love this car!
