Swimming FOB

Hi All,

I have an 07 Sport Auto with 89,000 miles.
Have loved the car.
My daughter used it yesterday to go Kayaking. And she dropped the keys in the Merrimack River tidal basin at hightide.
Hightide has about 6-8 feet of water.
LowTide sand,muck and shallow pools.
This a.m at lowtide she went to look for them and did not find them.
This evening I went to look and found them in a shallow pool. Amazing Luck.
I went back to the car and the FOB still work.
I used my spare key to drive and upon return home I washed the FOB lightly with clean water. Dried and then took it apart. There was only the slightest hint of moisture on the inside. Like a foggy windshield.
I tried it, and have left it apart for the overnight.

Is there anything else I should do?

The gasket around the chip seems flawless.

Thanks.

You should be good to go, if it worked before you started drying it out I don't see why it would stop working after you dried it out. That's some pretty good luck you have though!

Honda fobs rock. I dumped my canoe a couple weekends ago with my Ridgeline key attached to it. Only spent 2 hours in the water but still worked fine.

The keyfob story is awesome to hear about...It makes me glad to know I have reliable keys in my pocket. However, I must ask...How did you manage to put 89,000 miles on a 2007 car already? Wow you must really love to drive your Fit!!!

Just FYI...

I have been whitewater paddling with mine in my PFD's pocket for over two years and still works to this day.

I average about 100 days a year on the river...

NO worries.

Hi,

Yes it is great luck and good workmanship on Honda's part that the FOB was found and works.

89,000 Miles. I bought in late May 06. I do about 3500 miles a month.
The car is so versatile and fun.

Did have to do a warranty replacement of catalytic converter at 79K. Still under factory til 80K. I am not sure my Honda Care would have covered, but don't think so. This type of heavy use makes me glad I have a
6 year/128,00 Honda Care warranty.

Anyway.....go Honda.

I'm not amazed that much that it still works as much as i'm amazed you found it! Nice story. I go whitewater kayaking often with the key in my non-waterproof pocket. No problems what-so-ever.

Sice this was salt water keep you may want to flush with fresh water to prevent corosion in the copper and tin electronic connections. just take the battery out before you flush to avoid tempting a short once again, open it up, flush and let dry.
I hate to tell you to get it wet again, but with salt in there it may work for a while, and in a few weeks or months stop working because of corrosion.

That's awesome. Good to know. A few months after I got my New Beetle, I went swimming in the ocean with the (keyless entry/alarm button) key in my shorts pocket, just as I'd always done with my previous manual-everything cars. Didn't think anything of it.

Came back to the car after swimming, key was shot, couldn't disable the alarm. It fortunately came with two alarm thingies, but it kind of sucked because my wallet and phone and clothes and everything were in the car. Ended up begging the subway attendant to let me on in my swimsuit with no money, went to my friend's house who had my spare housekey, and got the second key. Learned my lesson though. Gah.

I guess this is the modern-day equivalent of locking your keys inside the car...which was indeed a huge hassle when it happened to me in college. Talk about a massive brain fart.

Anyway, nice to know your keyfob's still working fine. That's one tough cookie you got there.

you must live in this car? i have 24,000 on my 07 and i picked mine up in 06 also, yeah it was nov 06 but good hell thats amazing and even 89,000 you must have a monthly expense for oil and at my dealership we have a contract people can buy that if they buy 10 oil changes in advance they get them for 10.99 (per oil change) - do you have one of these???
these mileage reports are awesome - i love my fit, people that look at a fit and the competition and don't end up buying a fit SHOULD NOT REPRODUCE!!!

My fob went through a complete wash cycle, and was almost through the dryer cycle as well when I discovered it. It worked then, and continues to work w/no problems!!
