Air filter test

why buy a aftermarket air filter??
Change your air filter

The test team at Consumer Reports was sure that a car would get better mileage with a clean rather than a dirty air filter.

"It stands to reason that if the air is allowed to flow freely, it would result in better fuel economy," spokesman Douglas Love said.

To do the test, the team used duct tape to partially cover the air intake, simulating a dirty filter. And the result?

"We were surprised to find out it didn't much matter," Love said. "The mileage was about the same."

So, testers added a bit more tape and then some more. Short of blocking off all the air, they got the same results.

"We found that the onboard computers that adjust the fuel mixtures on recent cars did a surprisingly effective job," he said.

The auto club ran a test with clean and dirty fuel filters on several different cars. Results were similar.

"There was even one test where the mileage got a little bit better -- maybe 1% or 2% -- with the dirty filter," Mazor said.

But before you count the money you can save in air filters, there is a price to pay.

"The trade-off was that carbon monoxide emissions went up," he said.

Just popping in to point out that most fitfreaks are putting on aftermarket intakes in conjunction with exhausts for hp/tq not mpg increases

And according to our dyno it didn't matter much there either.

For those who wish, run 40 to 60 mph stopwatch times before and after intake mods and see what differences you get.

Yeah, but how about all that extra noise?! Surely that's worth something, if only to your neighbors!
It'll SOUND faster! Well, with exhaust mods, at least.
Plus, as an added bonus, it costs money, the spending of which is a good thing, according to our government!

Stickers. Just slap some stickers on there. I hear they're good for about 10-20 HP at the wheels!

5 whp from an intake isn't bad considering we only have around 94 whp to begin with.

dyno runs say less than 1 hp at the drive wheels (and thats being generous cause the measurements are within statistical limits). 4whp is marketing speak.

And let's not forget most advertisements promote PEAK hp gained. So, you might gain 5whp for 300 rpm. but if you look at the overall power and torque curve it most likely gains little elsewhere or can in fact lose power.

The real truth is, this engine is not a hot-rod engine. It's made to be practical, just as the entire Fit is made to be practical. Short of a swap or at least a turbo, the Fit just isn't going to be fast. It is HUGE fun, but it ain't gonna beat a Corvette in the quarter-mile. Or even a Chevette.
That being said, I do truly love my Fit. I bought it because I like it the way it is. It's cute, it's fun, it handles well, and it gets 34 MPG with me driving.

I keep very accurate milage records on my 2000 Accord V6 Coupe. I never changed the air filter until the car went in for a major inspection at 93,000 miles. Since then, with a new air filter, the milage is exactly the same as it was with the original old air filter. I now have a little over 102,000 miles.
