MPG for First 8 Fill-ups
This is for prospective Fit owners and anybody else who may be interested.
I've had my MT Fit since late April of this year and have filled the tank eight times. Most of the miles I've driven so far have been on trips, usually right at the speed limit (50 or 55 on blue highways, 65 on interstates). I'm not a hypermiler per se, though I do accelerate very gently, occasionally put the car in neutral on long downhills, and try to glide to a stop when I can see one coming. I don't have a scan gauge. In general I try to keep rpm's below 3000.
Tank 1: 8.562 gal, 299 miles, 34.93 mpg
Tank 2: 8.194 gal, 353.1 miles, 43.09 mpg
Tank 3: 9.145 gal, 373.6 miles, 40.85 mpg
Tank 4: 8.2 gal, 329.8 miles, 40.21 mpg
Tank 5: 7.493 gal, 315.8 miles, 42.1 mpg
Tank 6: 8.0 gal, 331.9 miles, 41.48 mpg
Tank 7: 7.804 gal, 307.5 miles, 39.42 mpg
Tank 8: 9.011 gal, 353.3 miles, 39.2 mpg
Total to date: 66.409 gal, 2667 miles traveled, 40.16 mpg
I'm very satisfied with my mpg and with the quality and fun factor of the Fit. Happy too that I got a manual transmission. Oh yeah, the car is red!

At 65 the rpm's are around 3200. I don't think I'm getting great mileage at that speed, and I prefer to drive at 55 -- sometimes I go 55 even on the interstate, which I can do safely enough here in Vermont, where we don't have too much traffic. Probably somebody with a ScanGauge could tell you exactly what the mpg is at 3200 rpm's.
As far as engine sound goes, it doesn't seem bad, but it is definitely noisier at 65-70 than it is at 55.

I am looking forward to applying some more hypermiling techniques and getting really, really good mpg figures -- my goal is to bust 50 someday. It will probably need to be a trip when I'm by myself (my wife gets impatient when I drive slowly) and have plenty of time to arrive at my destination. I'll take low speed limit highways or just go at 50-55 on the interstate and take the uphills slowly and coast on the downhills. It will be a challenge. I'm not going to do anything dangerous, such as turning off my engine or drafting ("drifting" ?) closely behind tractor trailers, or going way slower than the traffic in congested areas.

One day I might be brave enough to drop my freeway speed to 65mph. Atm I think 70 is my avg, and even at that speed I get passed. But for the extra savings...I might try it when traffic isn't too heavy. Going 55mph on a California freeway is almost asking to get into an accident or shot.

I'm no expert with my scangauge yet but i have used it for about 2 wks and 1 1/2 tanks. From observing the current mpg readout, rpms dont matter. What matters is the throttle position. i have achieved 40-44 mpg at 70 mph on level hwy no wind. same at 50, 55, 60 etc. i really seems to matter how much you press on the pedal. also when you et a chance on downhills, coast in gear, the mpg readout goes to infinity due to the injectors not firing. before scangauge on my first tank i got about 36-37 mpg. with scangauge on the current tank (at 1/2) now, i am averaging 40.7 by concentrating on throttle position (which is one of the readouts on scangauge). My today trip average to and from work (30) miles was 43.8 mpg.
That's interesting about throttle position. Certainly it pays to drive at a steady rate of speed whenever possible to maximize mpg's. But it also seems logical that there should be a "sweet speed" at which an engine performs most efficiently. I can't imagine that a little 1.5-liter engine screaming along at 3500 rpm's and 75 mph (or whatever) is going to burn gas as efficiently as it will at 2800 and 50 mph, when it isn't under such a load. I'm not an automotive engineer, though, and this is just my hunch. Any others -- particularly veteran hypermilers -- care to comment?

You are right the more rpm the more fuel used unless you are drafting then you would use less fuel than not drafting. I do not go above 3K and I usually don't go above 2.5k unless I draft which I may see 3k-3.5K on some interstate stretches. The key is to accelerate slow, shift at 2.5k and coast(neutral, in gear and FAS - I use all 3) like a mofo. Also, do not go above the speed limit and go below the speed limit if you can get away with it......some places I can and others I can't.

my first 8 tanks - Sport AT
Saw this post and since I just finished my 8th tank I thought I'd post my experiences so far. My driving style with this car has been what I'd call slightly conservative. I drive probably 90% highway miles commuting to work and back 5 days a week (80 miles round trip). I accelerate until about 3000 rpm around town, and getting up to speed on the highway I'll kick it up to 4500. I cruise at 70mph on the highway with none of that hypermiling funny-business
I didn't track amount of gas used or anything - just calculated the mileage and saved it in my phone.
EDIT: Forgot to mention that my commute has several significant hills that cause a downshift into 4th to maintain 70mph - I'm sure that has an effect on my somewhat lower numbers as well.

I guess I drive even more conservatively than you do. My max speed on the interstate is 65. And maybe we're looking at the difference between the manual and the auto transmissions, with the manual delivering the better mpg.

I've dropped my cruising speed to 65 and I managed 38.5 mpg on this past tank Looks like the manual is quite a bit more efficient though, especially considering the gearing difference in 5th. I'm hoping as I run up the miles I'll get to 40 mpg now and then - I've only got about 3200 miles on it so far.

That's about how many miles I've driven so far, too.
I've been doing some hypermiling lately. For instance, when I drive in to town, I coast down a long hill, starting off in neutral and then putting it into fifth when I get near the intersection with a state highway, with no pressure on the gas pedal all the way to the road. (I figure that's about one free mile.) Also, I've been doing a long coast before making the turn off of the highway and back onto the road with the hill (the hill being uphill, of course, when I'm heading home). On my current tank, the gauge says I have used about an eighth of a tank, and I'm showing over 70 on the trip odometer. Let's see, 8 x 70 = 560 . . . . Well, no way am I going to drive 560 miles on one tank of gas. But my goal is to break 400 on a single tankful, and maybe I'm headed toward doing that with this tank. I'll post my mpg when I fill up next -- though don't know when that will be, as I'm not driving much these days, other than taking my son to work in the morning.

Fill-up Number 9
Tank 9: 8.767 gal, 366.5 miles, 41.8 mpg
About half of this was back and forth to town, which is a 6-mile round trip. The second half of the tank was mainly interstate driving. So the tank was slightly over my 40.16 overall average.
I'm heading down to Massachusetts tomorrow, with no real time constraints. It will all be on I-91, which doesn't have much traffic until you get into northern Mass. Debating whether to try some serious hypermiling...

I've been consistently getting around 36mpg. I've only filled up about 5 or 6 times. Actual data is in the car. This is what i can remember
36.5
39.8
44.2
36.
35.5
The 44.2 was from coasting down hills and such. I usually drive conservatively sometimes with A/C.

Hi all,
First x fill ups with a 2008 MT, do a little 1 sec drafting, slowed down quite a bit (keep it under 65 most of the time & it makes a huge diff):
3/23/08: 32.86
4/2/08: 34.32
4/12/08: 38.58
4/25/08: 39.45

5/18/08: 36.47<-long trip cruise at 70mph
5/19/08: 36.35 <-long trip cruise at 70mph
6/2/08: 41.15 <-Whahoo! broke the 40mpg mark
6/13/08: 42.66 <-Nothing different, warmer temps I think

Through 4 fillups for me:
1) 26.4
2) 29.3
3) 30.1
4) 29.8
I was getting 17 mpg before the fit so I'm happy. But I would love to get in the 35 range. But I have an AT so I hear that limits my ability and I do a fair amount of city and hill driving to get to work every day
Alos I just pumped up the tires to 40 psi. When I checked them yesterday thy were between 28-32. Hopefully that will help.

I just got back from my trip to Massachusetts, and I got 42.03 mpg. It was mostly interstate driving, 65 mph max, some A/C, and I was able to draft a tractor trailer for about 50 miles (not too close, for safety's sake).
I hope the mpg increases as the engine continues to break in. (I'm currently at 3400 miles.) I think that I'll need great conditions to break the 45 mpg barrier, and I can't imagine breaking 50 as some have done. The latter must require extreme use of hypermiling techniques, some of them perhaps unsafe and potentially unleashing road rage on the part of fellow users of the road.
