MPG for First 8 Fill-ups
#21
I picked up the following technique on this forum some time ago and have been using it ever since: Fill the tank at the pump's slow speed until the pump automatically shuts off. Then set the pump handle to the slow speed again and continue filling until it shuts off again (usually only a second or two). Then no more filling, not even to "round up" to a given purchase price. This seems to be working for me, preventing wild swings on my mpg figures.

It's less likely that you are driving inconsistently than that the pumps you are using to get your fuel are inconsistent. In other words, you may be adding more gas than usual on some occasions, and that's throwing off your mpg figures.

It's not, because the wind noise to fit's wall of drag (the windshield) is overwhelming. Good thing I got the Fit sport with its aux jack. I just turn up the ipod

My latest fill-up showed I got 44.045 mpg. Most of this was on interstates at between 60 and 65, with the AC on about half the time. There was also some driving along US 1A along the seacoast of southeastern New Hampshire. During this tank I did some rolling down hills and some 3-second drafting, and tried to accelerate very gently. The car is approaching 5000 miles on the odometer, so maybe the nice mpg reflects the engine breaking in. I am very pleased.

Last 5 fill ups. 5MT with 1500-1600 mi. so far. 60% Driving in southern California freeways. Sometimes they move and sometimes they are bumber to bumper. The rest around town. When its hot I A/C. Tires at 32. shift between 3-3.5K. I have been trying to keep it under 70 when traffic is flowing (65 usually).
