I am considering the purchase of a Fit, as it seems like a great car.

Everyone here loves their fit, so this may be the wrong place to bring this up...

Is anyone concerned about the location of the gas tank?

To make the space for the magic seats in the back, the gas tank is located under the driver seat...

The driver seat is probably the safest place in the car, so perhaps this is the best place for the gas tank as well...any thoughts on this?

 

IMO, whether the gas tank is right under you or 3 feet behind you, it won't matter if it decides to blow up.

 

Honestly, that was my first thought as well.

 

Also how often have you heard of a gas tank blowing up?

I agree that it is completely safe. Great location for balance, but does look goofy when you are under the car. lol

 

Dude my gas tank already blew up once and I still drive the car.

Not concerned with where the gas tank is as long as it works

 

lol you know i just got the car like 3 weeks ago and i was woundering what the slashing around was from under MY SEAT.... lol but i found out after a few days when i looked lol its not so much the car blowing up but catching fire

 

i think if a gas tank caught fire it would blow up

gasoline in liquid form only burns. it has to be imulsified into air to be explosive (exactly what a fuel injector does).

a nearly empty fuel tank is more likely to explode than a full tank as there is more air inside for the fuel fumes to mix with.

 

That explaines why you can put almost 2 extra gallons of gas in your tank.

yeah. just the fumes burned. nothing exploded.
still, that is scary! i always make sure to ground myself before i touch the gas nozzle.

 

I'd rather sit on it than have it within crushing distance of the back bumper. I suppose manufacturers learned that lesson in the 70's though.

 

Just don't smoke while you're refuling.

And only Pintos and Crown Vics blow up in an accident. :P

The only place I wouldn't want the tank is at the very rear of the vehicle where it could rupture if you get rear ended.
Think Ford Mustang where I seen so many cases of those catching on fire when they got rrear ended and the spilling gas getting set on fire by the exhaust.

 

I find it funny how she doesn't run away when she puts the nozzle down she kind of just walks away.
