if you have two legs, get the manual transmission.

honestly, better MPG, more fun, more control of the car through the engine.

get the manual transmission.

people say they'd trade their AUTO fit for a manual fit, but not the other way around

I wish I could afford 2 fits.. the one I have and a MT. 60 miles a day in VA traffic, and the occasional bridge tunnel fiasco.... AT is great for all of that, and is still fun to drive.
It is true that the MT has many advantages... and would make a fun car for those w/ a shorter commute.
My $.02...

I'd say get the Fit Sport Auto with paddle shifters. Since the Fit is not fast anyway, might as well have the convenience of the Auto. MPG not much different either.

Speaking of paddle shifters....

MT people like to bust on the sport AT's paddle shifters...but I actually use mine every day... and like them.
MT's are faster... but FITs generally aren't "fast". (Luckily they're so fun to drive that you don't care that you're not in a rocket!)

Yep that va traffic I drive about 70+ miles a day but i still went with a stick and won't go back even if it can be an inconvenience at times.

Go with the stick man...

Oh, no! The Nazis are on the loose again.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRGGHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!

Reader's Digest condensed version:
MT does not give better MPG on the highway. AT does.
MT IS more fun.
Both are good.

Do yourself a big favor and do a search on this topic, I beg you. YOU will be making the payments, so decide for yourself. Good luck.

Manual of auto

The type of driving you do will have to be factored in. I suspect city driving will suggest an auto as will a lot of highway driving due to the higher gearing at high speeds over the manual gearing.

For fun on twisties and hills, the manual is what I selected and the manual shifting is very smooth and easy. I am going to teach several neighborhood kids how to drive with the manual since it is so easy. I can cruise at 75 to 85 mph and the engine is quiet but then again maybe my hearing is not as great as yours.

My mileage on the manual (40 mpg) has been better than expected even with spirited driving and being at 8000 feet in elevation.

Hope this helps but the manual is fun and I have a total of 10 cars with only two automatics so I may be bias.

The clutch in this car is so light and the shifter so easy that even driving in heavy traffic isn't bad at all. I don't know why people whine so much about manuals in traffic when it's never really bothered me.

I say get the MT.

I would have to say manual, even in traffic it doesn't bother me because it is second nature

Not to pour cold water on you, but the EPA disagrees.

According to this they are rated about the same for the base model, however the Sport-5 auto gets worse mileage slightly on the highway.
