Nav option on the 2009 (or any car, for that matter)

Hey all,

I am planning on purchasing a 2009 Fit pretty much as soon as I possibly can. I was thinking about the Nav option on the 2009s, and I wondered something... Does the extra money we spend on factory navigation systems come back when we sell the car?

Let's say the navigation option is $1500... How much more can I expect to get out of my Fit when I go to sell it later? Is it a poor investment?

IIRC, there was an article that stated the nav system is one of the many options in a car that does hold a good portion of its value.

A nav system does get dated, and is another built in item that can and will fail. I had a built in system in my boat and I will never have that again. It failed, is unrepairable, and none of the new units fit quite right. If you want to have a built in unit, a wood or wire frame, a little fiberglass cloth, some resin and a little paint.

With that said, I have owned many cars and they are all a "bad" investment, no matter how simple or tricked out. I buy a car for me, not for the next guy.

As said above yes they do get dated, technology will always continue to get better. But still, it is one option that does hold value compared to the rest.

The only reason I ask is I simply will not get the option if it won't kick back some when I sell the car...

Does anyone have any input on the quality of the navi units that Honda uses? I've used the navi in my dad's prius a little bit, and I really like it. I'm just wondering if anyone has tried both Honda and Toyota's navi units and has a preference for either.

I have the factory nav in my 06 Toyota 4Runner and can compare it with the nav in my Mom's 2008 MDX. The Toyota has much better resolution screen with sharper maps, but the Acura has a lot more points of interest, more user options, and a MUCH better voice recognition system that is very forgiving and easy to use. My Toyota nav also has a touch screen and the Acura nav you control it with buttons and a joystick, that is just a matter of preference. The pictures I have seen of the nav in the 2009 Fit appears to be the same general setup as the 08 Acura.

Overall the Toyota and Honda nav systems are the two highest rated in the research I have done. I am happy with my Toyota Nav, but will certainly be happy with purchasing the nav in the Fit whenever I can finally pick it up. Just wish it had Bluetooth!

If it's priced anything like the 8th gen Civics then it'll probably be a ~$2000 option. If you really want something in-dash for the same price you could get a Z3 or some other comparable aftermarket in-dash that plays DVDs and does other things (more than likely better). I bought a Garmin Nuvi 200w back in December on sale and after owning it I don't think I'd ever waste money on a factory navigation system. The Garmin is thin and just the right size and has a built in battery so at work if I need to run a delivery in the van I can just take the bracket and navigation out of the Fit and not even worry about getting the cord out. Plus it was only $250. All really boils down to what you want though, but on a cheap car like the Fit I don't think you'll see much resale value from it; but we'll have to wait until it comes out to see how much Honda is charging for it and if it'll be worth it or not.

Is it a $2k difference in the 08 Civics? When I bought my wife's 07 EX last year, the EX with Nav was exactly $800 higher than the EX without. I thought that price very reasonable for factory integrated nav as I had seen the $2k difference in other manufacturers cars.

I truly see no purpose of buying a $2,000 factory nav system when you can just get a smaller normal gps for like @200-300. While there may be some advantages with the factory nav system, but i see it as not worth the money. And if it is getting outdated, you gotta take it to the factory whereas if you had an aftermarket one you could get one whenever something better comes out.

Is it confirmed that the 2009 Fit will definitely NOT have Bluetooth?

The buit-in Nav has been a great feature in my last car. No mounting or wiring needed, integrated voice control, steering wheel controls, built-in DVD database, and the clean look are some advantages.

However, the external nav is certainly smarter from a financial viewpoint. There is also the option of installing an aftermarket built-in nav for less than the factory option as well.

Current Honda Nav Prices from their website:

08 CR-V- $1700
08 Civic- $1750
08 Odysey- $2000
08 Ridgeline- $2000
08 Accord- $2200
08 Pilot- $2200

My guess is that the Fit nav will be around $1500-$1700.

I have seen nothing confirmed but look at the two buttons in the lower left corner of the steering wheel. The 09 Fit does not have the phone icons compared to the 09 Accord which is confirmed to have bluetooth.

Must have been a sale going on. It's never been an $800 option, I had an 06 Civic and spent many hours on 8thcivic.com and the debate came up lots of times there as well; it's always been just under $2000.

Hmm... $800 sounds great... or somewhere near $1000.

$2000 is a no-no for me. I'll gladly stick my Garmin Nuvi to the window at that price. I imagine with the proliferation of Iphones and similar devices over the next few years (with built in GPS and internet), any such devices on the car itself will be nearly useless.

Could be. On Honda's website, the difference now is $1750. They sure didn't advertise a sale back then, but I'm glad I bought when I did.

So, if I entertain the idea of upgrading to an 09, and the nav option costs that much, I'll go with the Garmin.
